It's a 50 minute Nintendo Direct! 2/17/21

Wow, guys! The first actual non-Mini Direct since September 2019, and it's a whopper too. Hopefully they don't lean too heavily on the "available games" (unless it's Tadpole Treble Encore)! Looking forward to seeing what's in store for Switch for the first half of the year. Maybe Mario Golf? And possibly a Smash reveal that I don't despise?

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

It was a good Direct with a bunch of stuff packed in. However, I feel like the big items we've been waiting on are being pushed to right on purpose. I could totally see Metroid Prime 4, BotW2, and Splatoon 3 being launch titles for a beefed up Switch Pro in 2022.

Pretty impressive. They managed to go 45 minutes showing off nothing that interested me and then finally a game that isn’t releasing until 2022... okay, maybe I’ll bite on Skyward Sword HD if there’s an option to disable Fi.

Really couldn’t at least whip up another little teaser for a game that has been in development for nearly four years? Not even a little taste? That’s something that just unfortunately couldn’t be done? Well, it will just make the eventual reveal more exciting anyway... probably get an entire Direct to itself.

They did, however, continue the tradition of a super disappointing Smash fighter, so that’s hilarious.

Oh well. At least they didn’t hype the event up for long. I know I sound negative but I honestly don’t really care that it was a boring dud all that much. Still plenty on my plate to play.

The lack of any of the big hitters was a bummer after all this time. Prime 4 - a logo back in 2017, Bayonetta 3 - slightly more than a logo back in 2017, BotW2 - bringing Aonuma on only to give an update on when an update will be...

But overall they showed a fair amount of stuff that I'm interested in. Those Famicom Detective games, Monster Hunter Rise, Mario Golf, No More Heroes 3, Ninja Gaiden collection...I'll definitely be getting more games on Switch this year than I did last year, and that's just from this first Direct.

I feel like I should be more excited for Splatoon 3, and I think it's because I was hoping for a different "one last thing" at the end. As a 2022 game, it's still a ways off so there's reason to think it could feel like more of a sequel than Splatoon 2 did. The way they revealed it was weird; if that's not a tease of the single-player, then I don't know what the significance of the non-gameplay stuff was.

We knew Prime 4 was going to be a ways off, but you have to wonder about BotW2 now. Of course, "we'll have more information later in the year" could mean they just wanted to hold it back for its own Direct, but I'm starting to think that's also further off than we expected. And not just in a "Covid lockdowns slowed down development" sorta way. I guess we'll see...later this year...at some unknown time...thanks Aonuma!

(Also - for all of you who haven't played it yet, 2019's Game of the Year Outer Wilds is coming to Switch and that should make this a great Direct on its own! Seriously, play it if you haven't yet!)

I feel ya. And I get why they would want to put it in its own Direct. It's what makes me wonder if maybe BotW2 today isn't what it looked like it was going to be back in 2019 (as in, it's not like they don't have anything to show - of course they could show something - but perhaps they're reluctant to tease a look at what the game is now without the proper context). I dunno. It still hurts that we had the promise of a quicker turnaround on a Zelda sequel for the first time in a long time, but now it looks like it'll be another 5+ year cycle.

Splatoon 3!!!!!!!! YEAH YEAH YEAH!!!!!!

Stay fresh!

My favorite surprises of this was the Splatoon 3 reveal, the Mario Golf confirmation, and the new project RPG. I'm happy to see Pyra/Mythra as Smash fighters too. Tons of the reveals were not my cup of tea but I see where they would entice the fanbase. I think Nintendo had an incredibly well rounded direct, even if not everyone had their WOW moment.

The most exciting games to me were the SRPG and Mario Golf!

@TheBigG753

I’d be pretty stoked if it has turned into one of those situations where it has become much more ambitious than originally planned. That happens with Nintendo sometimes and always leads to good things. I wouldn’t even mind if that means waiting longer.

So, Capcom Arcade is confusing. Not that I was going to buy anything anyway, but the only thing in the shop is a free Ghosts 'N Goblins? Is the rest of the stuff all coming at a later date? If so, the game sure doesn't make that clear.

I'm gonna say it.

The Smash Ultimate DLC has been a disappointment.

-Famicom Detective Club could be cool for the historical value of it. But I think I'd rather just play the original for that purpose.

-Mario Golf is always fun, but this game looks kind of ugly. Speed golf is a clever idea that could win over the golf-averse. Hopefully it has splitscreen

-No More Heroes 3 is also pretty ugly. But it's No More Heroes. Of course I'm gonna be excited.

-Neon White, Knockout City, and Triangle Tactics look like they could have something going. I'm be cautiously optimistic.

- I'll be tempted to pick up Ninja Gaiden Collection, since I never gave the first game a fair chance. This is supposed to be the Ying to DMC's Yang, right?

- I might be down for some Age of Calamity DLC. It depends on whether or not I burn myself out, since I've just about finished my time with the vanilla game at this point.

- I might be tempted to revisit Skyward Sword without the motion controls. I tried to replay it a year or two ago and was shocked by how much of a hassle the motion controls felt like. I was all about them back in the day, but I guess years of not playing Wii games has made me less tolerant of motion controls. So this could be a welcome change.

- Splatoon 3. Sure, why not?

Some fun announcements although I get if people don't see a big "WOW" moment in this, especially when the last real big Direct was back in 2019.

Splatoon 3 being revealed as a 2022 game is also getting me wondering about BOTW2 and Metroid Prime 4's release status. It's possible BOTW2 is a 2022 game unless we get a full gameplay blowout later this year (not an impossibility and Aonuma did say he hopes to share more "later this year"). However with what little we've seen of Metroid Prime 4 for all we know that could wind up to be a 2023 release.

@Hero_Of_Hyrule

The Smash DLC has disappointed me every time so far with this pack... and we still haven’t gotten the inevitable Pokémon they’ll probably save for last just to really put a crown on the turd... and then if they somehow announce a third pack, I’ll still put money down on it right away and repeat this cycle of despair.

@CPA Wei

I still really want them to launch their next system with Prime 4. Take their time on a really ultimate Metroid game that is sure to get amazing reviews and then let it shine as the killer app of a system launch. The series really needs and deserves that recognition.

Another solid show! Nothing that totally blew me away, but, as usual, I want to play almost every game shown. DC Super Hero Girls, baby!!

Oh, and Miis are back! Is Wii Sports around the corner? Will BotW 2 be populated by our Miis?

Highlights: Mario Golf (the speed golf mode looks awesome - Camelot is really at the top of their game), all of the Capcom stuff, Spla3een, Ninja Gaiden Trilogy, and Tactics Octopath

@Zero
Nah, the other games are paid downloadable content for the free Capcom Arcade app. I'm pretty excited about digging into these games, actually. Love me some Capcom. Even the shitty arcade Bionic Commando! I wish owners of the Capcom Beat 'Em Up collection got a discount, though.

Okay, so Mario Golf...like, I'm about 80% excited for it but also a little worried. One of the things I love about golf games is that pleasant, calming atmosphere of being around luscious valleys and greens and enjoying nature. The game looks good but not really as gorgeous as I'd like; the colors are too neon saturated, particularly the grass, and it doesn't quite have that fancy polished look on the characters that, say, Odyssey had. A bit more like the semi-generic Mario Party "look," if that makes sense?

Also, while the new action-based mode looks like it could be some good frantic fun, the fact that it's part of the game's subtitle makes me a little concerned it's going to be a heavy focus for the game, leaving the classic golf gameplay somewhat barebones. Just kind of a gut feeling more than anything.

And I have to say, I'm STILL not convinced they're going to give us a proper Story Mode, even with those stats onscreen! I feel like we've heard this song-and-dance before, for both Mario Golf 3DS and Mario Tennis Aces. The use of generic Mario enemies as the NPCs gives me the impression that this mode will lack the personality to make it more than the sum of its parts--not unlike the recent Paper Mario games.

Not to sound too negative, it's just that I've been waiting for a new console Mario Golf since 2004's (!!) Toadstool Tour, and I really want to see a game that can rival that one in terms of gameplay, aesthetics, unlockables, and everything else.

@TriforceBun
I think that Speed Golf is a potentially brilliant solution to the slowness and lack of genuine player interaction inherent in sequential-turn multiplayer golf games. It looks like it's geared towards online and local wireless play. It probably won't affect single-player or hotseat play too much.

And I'm positive that this game will have a "Story Mode" in name only, just like Mario Golf 3DS. I don't see them making a big 3D RPG world.

But I do think everything else will be best-in-class. The new arcadey systems in Mario Tennis Aces really brought the core gameplay to new heights, and I think that Speed Golf could similarly amp up multiplayer Mario Golf. (And the single-player action in Mario Golf was never as flawed and tired as pre-Aces Mario Tennis.)

Hopefully, they've improved the camera since Mario Golf 3DS, though.

@Anand Yeah but what I mean is I couldn't even find the other games. If I went to play one it would send me to the Ghosts 'N Goblins download on the shop, no matter what the game I was trying to play was.

Challenger Pack 9
Fighting Waifu Team does nothing for me, but pretty much everybody worth a damn is already in Smash, so whatev

Outer Wilds
People say this is really good, but I'd probably rather play it on PC?

Famicom Detective Club remakes
These are neat as a historical oddity I probably learned about from a Smash trophy or something, and also they look way more polished than any other visual novel I've ever seen.

Mario Golf: Super Rush
I like the idea of Speed Golf, but otherwise this looks like a weird middle ground... I think Mario sports games should go all in on the Mario iconography, but this looks like Wii Sports Golf with some Mario character models swapped in for the Miis. (Which is also to say, it doesn't look much better visually than the Wii game.)

No More Heroes 3
Yep, looks like some more No More Heroes.

Neon White
A deckbuilder(?) crossed with a fast-paced Quake-style shooter? Kinda interesting, but something I'd probably rather play on PC.

Knockout City
Okay it's yet another team shooter, right? With super generic, annoying characters! But wait... it's also dodgeball sorta!

World's End Club
The creators of Danganranpana and Zero Escape bring you... sidescrolling Zero Escape Babies? Uhhhhh

Hades physical edition
HADES IS A GAME I LIKE!

Ninja Gaiden Master Collection
I did adore Ninja Gaiden Black and NG Sigma 2... but man, NG3 Razor's Edge was so bad it actually brings down this collection, haha

BOTW 2 information maybe coming later this year
:(

Skyward Sword HD
Eh, sure.

Splatoon 3
An actual surprise! But not really for me.

So yeah, not exactly what I'd hoped for from the first Direct in well over a year, but oh well.

@nate38

Maaaaaaan, I’ll give you two more smashing packs right here and now that top this current one.

Fighter Pass 3:

Ryu Hayabusa
Pig-beast Ganon
Crash Bandicoot
Doom Slayer
Sub-Zero
Resident Evil somebody or somebodies

Fighter Pass 4:

Crono
Mike Jones (to complement the Next Level Games revival that should be under development)
Rayman
Gordon Freeman
Lara Croft
Dante

And those are just the top characters I personally think would be super neato. I’ve heard the cries for your Soras and Genos and Master Chiefs. They could still bring in a top fan favorite from other fighting series like Tekken, Soul Calibur, or Virtua Fighter and make those people happy. They can dive into other retro characters like Rad Spencer or the Contra or Double Dragon or River City Ransom or Bubble Bobble hunks. And don’t anybody ever forget Gex.

I dunno. It looked like I could buy all 3 packs or the discounted 3-pack set as DLC on the Arcade Stadium eShop page.

Yeah, there are still characters that I'd LOVE to have in Smash: Phoenix Wright, Leon or Jill from RE, an Advance Wars rep, a Rhythm Heaven rep, a Final Fantasy rep that actually represents the series on Nintendo, Pig Ganon, Tetris, Bomberman (already an AT), Kunio-Kun from River City, Rayman, some deep dive retro picks like Paperboy, Toejam & Earl, or Mike Jones up there. @Hinph has got the right idea; I'm by no means a Crash Bandicoot fan but I'd take his packs over FP2 in a heartbeat. I'm a huge Smash fan and will likely never buy FP2!

I did quite enjoy FP1 though. Series like Dragon Quest and Banjo-Kazooie were long overdue for a Smash debut.

@TriforceBun

More excellent ideas! I wish they would just keep going with Smash Ultimate and make it more and more Ultimater. I understand if Sakurai is tired and wants to move on too. That’s fine. Don’t tell me there isn’t somebody competent who has been working on this series who can’t take over and do a great job.

The best part is that poor Hinph wouldn’t get upset when there is a character he really disagrees with because it wouldn’t be a limited slot thing. It’d be a “the more, the merrier” mentality. Hell, put a new Biblysh and pocket critter in every pack and I won’t complain, I promise. We can collect the entire cast of Final Fantasy VII.

Edit: My autocorrect still doesn't know “Sakurai”? C’mon, buddy.
