Couldn’t really tell from the trailer if this has actual RPG gameplay, or is more like Sticker Star/Color Splash? Hope it is more like The Thousand Year Door.

@GameDadGrant Yeah I had a hard time getting a sense of the gameplay from the trailer, but it looked like it had a lot of variety overall.

Wow, uh, that was quite a shadow drop. And it's coming out in two months, no less??

So first up, screw leakers. Always and forever.

Secondly, not to be negative but I've been burned by this series a lot lately. It seems like the more they double-down on the paper/comedy aspect, the less I actually enjoy the games. Having the trailer focus on that element makes me feel like IS/Nintendo doesn't really know why the first two games are so beloved. The fact that it's described as an adventure rather than an RPG adds to that feeling. But who knows, Nintendo is older and wiser these days so it might be great. Will be keeping my eye on this for sure!

Wow, that's a short announcement date to release date there!

Honestly kind of surprised with all of the Wii U ports we have been getting that they didn't just port Color Splash over, but I'll take a new game! I'm one of those weirdos who has liked all styles of Paper Mario games so I see this as a win regardless of what it plays like.

But I certainly wouldn't mind if they went back to the TTYD style.

@TriforceBun

I kinda get what you mean. The last few entries have been okay little games, but not anywhere near as meaty as TTYD was. (I thought SPM on Wii was a fresh blast though.) I do enjoy the adventure/exploration elements. It's some of the other stuff that gets me with the battle systems.

Cautiously optimistic for this one.

Nothing will ever be TTYD.

I think we'll all be far, far happier human beings when we get through the stages of grief and just accept that, fully and completely. (Also let's not forget that TTYD, beloved as it is, sold far less than Super Paper Mario and Sticker Star. [I don't know about Color Splash, that probably flopped alongside the Wii U.] Nintendo has seen more success with these less-RPG versions of Paper Mario, for whatever reason.)

This looks great, and fun, and Color Splash was also great and fun, so I'm in for sure. My wife and I love playing these games together. Just the right blend of action and RPG to not scare her off (action) and not bore me (RPG). Can't wait.

I also would love to see them port Color Splash because I know a lot of folks missed out on it, and it was extremely solid. Probably my favorite non-TTYD Paper Mario game.

@Shadowlink I actually kind of like the way the more recent ones break things into levels, and much like a normal Mario platformer, each level felt pretty unique with interesting new elements to it. But yeah the RPG side of the series has suffered a bit in more recent entries. I feel like there is a "best of both worlds" design out there somewhere, but Intelligent Systems hasn't quite found it.

I enjoyed Color Splash. It was funny. I didn't find it nearly as memorable as the original two games though; I attempted to do a dissection of the series back when Color Splash first came out, but I think that breaking things down into "Color Splash didn't have badges, therefore it's bad" or "Thousand Year Door had better character designs, therefore it's good" is a little too simple of a way of looking at it. There's some weird stuff going on where the first two games just had way more meaningful gestalt than these last two, and exerting a ton of energy trying to figure out why that is is more miserable than actually playing any of these games.

So I'm looking forward to trying this out! Could be fun! Different, but fun.

Here's a little clip of combat:

Nintendo has been on a roll with getting their returning series right this generation, so hopefully it's a good release! We won't have to wait long to fix out.

Looks good. And, as we all know, Nintendo has a real surfeit of charming games!

But I don't care. These games are funny and appealing. I just hope the gameplay is well-balanced.

Is TTYD so much better than the original? I think that my copy might still be sealed...

Actually, I rank the original Paper Mario higher than TTYD! But it's close.

@Anand @TriforceBun I'd say TTYD is a huge step up. They're both good but TTYD felt like it took everything to the next level.

Yeah I loved the original Paper Mario but the Gamecube sequel was far superior in my opinion. No other game in the series has been quite as good as far as I'm concerned.

Omigosh, that looks amazing! What sort of monster wouldn’t want to play that?

@Zero

I put a lot of stake in originality, so the first PM gets huge points for setting up the whole system of consistent, low attack numbers, single partners, badges, and choosing a single stat upon level-up. It's an impressive feat! Plus, TTYD did get a little chatty and backtrack-y at times, so I find it a less consistent experience. Again though, both would probably fall in my top 10 RPGs of all time, no small feat.

I've never particularly been a fan of Paper Mario, so I didn't mind the concept of the series switching it up and trying different things. But I felt some of those different things just weren't very good on their own. That said, I'd still be willing to give this game a chance, and it looks solid at first glance.

@TriforceBun I'm with you, the N64 Paper Mario is still my fave of the series.

New trailer:

Game looks good to me! It seems to be mixing elements from all the various Paper Marios.
