Th... they really went with 4 unique 3rd party characters and ended it with another Fire Emblem character?

DISAPPOINTING.

Ah well, the game is still so packed it's hard to complain too much. Just an odd choice in the way they released these.

Uhhh, what? I like Three Houses, but again with a blue-haired Fire Emblem (semi-)swordie? I'm totally fine with more first-party characters, but geez. Can we get a little more variety at least? Unrepped series like Advance Wars, Excite, Rhythm Heaven. Or for existing series, Zelda still only has six characters, half of which are Link, and its last non-clone newcomer was in 2001's Melee!

Oh well, I loved the rest of this Pass overall (Hero alone was worth the price of admission), and there are more coming, so I can't complain too much.

Pretty much as bad as a Pokémon.
Whoa now, let's not say things we can't take back!

Although as a fellow...not-so-excited-about-Pokemon-in-Smash guy, I should tell you this: brace yourself, because after this reveal, I'm convinced we're almost certainly going to get a Pokemon Sword/Shield rep in Fighter's Pass 2.

@Hinph

As someone who loves Fire Emblem, I agree. This is preeeetty lame. The player insert characters are almost always the least interesting characters in their respective games. I sincerely doubt anybody would choose Robin or Byleth as their favorite character. And now we have three of these player inserts. Three! We're one away from having all of them!

What really stings is how this new stage is going to be full of more interesting characters from Three Houses. Hey, Dmitri. I'd much rather be playing as you than this white bread chump.

@Hero_Of_Hyrule Robin actually is one of my favorite characters, lol. But mostly because I like the fighting style, not because I particularly like the character much.

@Hero_Of_Hyrule

At least Robin had dialogue and interactions with the others. Byleth is just another mute protagonist, and not even one that I like (like Link or DQXI's Hero). He's always scowling beneath his angsty bangs and that light-pink sigil on his armor really bugs me for some reason! Maybe he'll grow on me as I process through the game, but right now, I'm enjoying every member of Golden Deer a lot more.

@Zero

Nah, I mean favorite character in Fire Emblem. Maybe this is hyperbole, but putting in Byleth over other Three Houses characters would be like if you had the chance to put someone from Undertale in the game and you chose Frisk.

In terms of gameplay, it's all okay. Robin's pretty fun in Smash. Corrin is decent too. And Byleth seems like they could be the most fun to play as out of the 3.

Wait, the last character after all this is from Fire Emblem? Ha ha, nobody trolls like Sakurai! I can only imagine the meltdowns on other sites...

Though I do think this is a rather odd choice, especially saving this for after all the hype and excitement everyone seemed to have for the previous four. I legitimately thought this would be another third-party character too, and that ones like this would be in the second round of DLC they announced. It almost makes me wonder if this were supposed to be another third-party character, but then negotiations fell through or something, and so they had to slap together a different character. Probably nothing more than a conspiracy theory though.

Probably not, but I did have exactly this same thought a moment ago. It feels so... off. This couldn't have been the plan, COULD IT?!

Nah, he's said before that he didn't choose the DLC characters, hence his apologetic self-aware jokes in this reveal. He knew people would be disappointed by Nintendo's focus on marketing their new game over putting in an interesting character. At least the moveset seems cool.

@Secret_Tunnel Yeah, I've told people as much meself, it's just funnier to phrase it that way.

In general, I get the feeling that Sakurai gets credited (for better or worse) for a lot of things in which he probably had little or no influence. He's simply the "face" of Smash Bros.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I haven't purchased any Smash DLC, or played the game in a long while even) but isn't the thing a 5-Character Pack? So, like, if you buy it you get all 5?

Because if so, and they recently announced another pack coming after this first one, does it not make supreme marketing sense to have the 5th character in an otherwise incredible pack be what is essentially a throw-away and save your big guns for the debut of Pack 2 so consumers flock to pay for it...?

That's certainly what I would do if I was a giant corporation working to make maximum profit.

And if originally I, the giant company, thought it was only going to be one 5-Character pack I might have lined up a great 5th character and then completely thrown that plan out the window as soon as I announced there was going to be another pack coming. Just saying.

@J.K. Riki I thought about that, but here is the flipside...

Up until this point, I saw their DLC strategy as get a bunch of unique, awesome new characters. So if they had ended strong here I'd probably just automatically be on board with anything else they did after the first 5.

But now that I know generic Fire Emblem characters and such might also be coming, I'm a bit more hesitant to jump onto ANOTHER paid DLC pack. I've already spent $80 on this game! Should I really go up to $100 if half the new characters could end up Pokemon and Fire Emblem and such?!

@J.K. Riki Now that's a conspiracy theory! Nintendo can sometimes be short-sighted so it wouldn't surprise me if that's true. However, the DLC characters can be purchased individually if someone doesn't want all of them, and the upcoming DLC will probably be handled the same way.

I could see this being a lesson in the risks of blind-buying DLC and there being less people buying the next pass before they're all revealed.

Ooo, there's going to be six fighters in the next pass? That's nice. That makes up for my disappointment over Fire Emblem character 15 last night. Even if there is another Fire Emblem and Pokémon character in the next fighter pass, that still leaves four characters that could actually be exciting.

I like that we finally got a lance/axe fighter (Castlevania bros' axes notwithstanding), but, yeah, otherwise disappointed about this one. Granted, I was expecting it to be some character I would have zero attachment to in the first place, so my expectations were set low enough that I wasn't too disappointed.

It is a bit absurd that Fire Emblem is now tied as the second most populous franchise in Smash though. I get Mario and Pokemon having the most reps, but I never would have guessed Fire Emblem would one day tie with Pokemon.

Yeah definitely a letdown after how splashy all the previous DLC fighters are. But oh well. At this point the only character left who would be a big get for Smash is Number Muncher. I'm guessing he'll be in the second DLC pack, probably the big opener.

The thing about Fire Emblem and Pokemon is that the former always shuffles up the roster so we usually won't have the same main character (unlike say Zelda, Metroid or Mario) and the latter always has new Pokemon.

Unless a new Fire Emblem game is releasing within the next two years I think it's safe to believe that we won't get one in Fighter Pack 2. However, I fully expect we will get a Sword/Shield representative in the next batch.

@DrFinkelstein
Haha, I was so close to being late. I had to defy the laws of Google Map physics.

And I fell asleep super-early yesterday and had, like, eight dreams about watching the Smash Bros. announcement. What is wrong with my brain.

Anyway, I enjoyed the reveal. Just wondering how Sakurai was going to troll us. And he did! People are focusing on Fire Emblem, but this dude is mechanically very interesting, just like the other DLC characters.

6 still isn't enough.

You know how many great iconic characters there are out there?

Still plenty of newcomers they could use for Smash 6.

@carlosrox

Yeah, I'd like them to keep going even after these six... but then this is going to take us to December of 2021, so that would be a really long time supporting this game. I just hope what is left is good and there's no more Bibeths.
