Developer 'Two Tribes' To Cease Making Games After Rive (but Switch version coming!)

Developer Two Tribes is officially no longer making games after this September 2016. Their upcoming title, Rive, will be their last. The team announced this through their website earlier Thursday, March 10th. Rive is an up and coming side-scrolling shooting game which shows a lot of polish based on the Wii U demo last year. The move to stop being a game developer comes as a shock to the gaming community and has taken many off guard. Others may know Two Tribes for being the masterminds behind the beloved Toki Tori franchise.

You can read full details of the announcement at their blog. An excerpt summary is quoted below.

Two Tribes said:
Long story short (grandfathers like to digress!): when running a company, you need to be on top of your game, not just in terms of the product you’re making, but business-wise too. And we just aren’t on top of the games business anymore. Therefore, it makes sense to focus our attention elsewhere, perhaps even outside the games industry. We simply don’t know yet; but we do know that RIVE is going to be our parting gift to you and we’re making damn sure it’s going to be an awesome one!

Stay tuned for the release in September 2016!

Best of luck to the Two Tribes crew! Their games will be fondly remembered and their fans will continue to love them. Tell us about your memories on the developer and your feelings towards the news below!

@Zero

I thought it was very impressive but I'm not sure it was for me. With this news, I feel sympathetic and feel maybe I should consider giving it another shot. I wish I key the demo on my Wii U. The fridge was full before I bought my hard drive and I deleted the demo.

Toki Tori 2 is one of my absolute favorite games from the past 5 years. Awesome game.

Not too terribly surprising... I remember them saying that Toki Tori 2 was a massive bomb, which is a shame because of how brillaintly designed that game is. I'll have to check out Rive too.

@PogueSquadron Absolutely agree. Simple controls, but so much you could do with just butt-stomp and whistle. I didn't quite 100% it, but close. Plus my mostly non-gaming wife enjoyed, and my old son got the hang of it too.

@Secret_Tunnel They, unfortunately, had to lay off all of their staff due to the failure of Toki Tori 2. Easily worth full-price, and the fact it failed still saddens me.

Anyway, while the news is upsetting, I'm not particularly surprised. A lot of mid-tier game developers have been having massive difficulties in the market as of late, especially due to the prevalence of Indie Bundles and ludicrous Steam Sale prices turning the sale of games into a race to the bottom as more and more consumers would rather just wait and purchase a game for a dollar with six other steam keys. It's a real shame that things have developed this way, but the massive devaluation of a market that a lot of these sorts of developers rely on to remain in business will likely mean that an entire segment of the market, one I particularly like, will eventually cease to exist, or have to resort to capitalizing on market trends like mobile free-to-play gaming to actually remain solvent.

Regardless, I'm excited for RIVE, and while I doubt it'll bring Two Tribes "back", sincerely hope it's a huge success for them, because the Nindies@Home demo from last year was excellent.

I honestly couldn't say the last time I saw one of their games at full price. I feel like their games have been 99 cents or $2 for the past few years.

I've been meaning to buy Toki Tori 2 for years, and now I feel terrible that I haven't.

I hate to read this. They've put out a few great games over the years, and Toki Tori 2+ was absolutely brilliant.

I had no idea Toki Tori 2 didn't do well.
That makes me very sad since it's an excellent game. Poor Toki Tori.

Man, developers have been dropping like flies lately. One strike and you're out.

I always had a soft spot for Two Tribes. They seemed really enthusiastic and genuine. This sucks. I seriously fear for the future of this industry.

Looks like RIVE hitting a Nintendo platform is sort of up in the air now?!

The short story is that they're struggling to make it run smoothly on the Wii U tech and the Wii U is dying anyway, so they're thinking of moving it to NX, but they have no idea what NX is so they don't know if that will happen either.

Especially with this being Two Tribes last game due to financial reasons and such I kind of highly doubt they will prioritize releasing it on NX unless the stars align. Might just never see this game on a Nintendo platform.

BOOOOOOOOOOOURNS, that demo was awesome.

@Zero

Making a game for a Nintendo console instead of a Nintendo handheld may not work out, eh? Wow I'm so shocked.

Classic developer mistake. They'll get no sympathy from me. They deserve their fate.

@GameDadGrant

Dude, you're my friend, but don't. Just don't.

Did you try the demo on Wii U? Rive could not run on 3DS based on that. That's not what they were going for with this game, and that's okay...there are some great TT games on 3DS (and on the 3DS VC).

@GameDadGrant

But it's also on what, Steam, PS4 and Xbox One? It's not simply that they chose a Nintendo console over the handheld. And they're still striving to make it work on Wii U. And heck, even on NX if they have to.

I'm pretty sure the Wii U version is not happening, but it is coming to Switch!

@Zero

They announced months ago that the Wii U version was canned. Glad to see it appear on Switch though.
