A simple news story… Nintendo Account is now open for North American registration.

Sign up now and soon get access to the initial features. More are surely to come!

Nintendo Account is Nintendo's attempt to unify their platform which should hopefully lead to a future of cross-talking consoles, handhelds, online content, etc. My Nintendo, Nintendo's upcoming Club Nintendo replacement, should be requiring the sign up of a Nintendo Account so get going!

Edit: Now the Miitomo pre-registration has begun! You can do so by click on this link.

US only, at the link anyway.

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

Confused about these Platinum Points people are speaking of. How do you get those? I'm not sure what I'm missing, but I have nothing that uses points or whatever. Is that a non-US thing still?

@J.K. Riki

Apparently the names are not unique, so you too can be canonj if you wish!

@Mop it up

Strange. When I signed up the first night I received the validation code within a minute. Maybe try another email address?

@J.K. Riki

Right now there are no points, but in March they will be launching the new My Nintendo program which replaces Club Nintendo. My Nintendo will have platinum points, and you'll get some bonus points by registering for Miitomo now.

@J.K. Riki Rewards will be separated into two different tiers: Gold Points (received from buying Nintendo games, consoles and digital content), and Platinum points that you'll get from logging into your "My Nintendo" account, playing games on your phone, and other non-transaction based things.

How you earn the points differs, as does how you use them. Platinum points can be exchanged for digital contents (wallpapers, game DLC), while gold points will change into discount vouchers — for buying more Nintendo stuff. Wait, no more Mario caps and frivolous Nintendo toys, a la Club Nintendo? Not quite: Nintendo's investor briefing slides add that you will be able to swap Platinum points for "original goods", mentioned separately to digital swag.

@cooliocuneo

So basically:

Gold points = Deluxe Digital Promotion for Wii U (redeem points for discounts towards future games)
Platinum points = Club Nintendo (redeem points for Nintendo merch)

@canonj Yeah, that's how I see it.

But really, this is Nintendo, nothing is straight forward. I'm sure Platinum points can be swapped for Gold points, but only during certain phases of the moon, and only for 3/4 their worth, meaning you'll always have partial credit you'll never get to spend until the next blue moon.
