Dragon Quest VIII has some extras. VII was actually a PS1 game and featured graphics more closely aligned with the remakes of IV - VI on the DS. They pretty much completely redid the look of the game. From what I have heard they also redid some of the structure and pacing of the game as well.

Haha, Jargon Quest.

I thought this Direct was pretty exciting, overall. I looove Twilight Princess, but I'm not sure that I need it in HD. The two seconds of Skyward Sword they showed looked a hundred times better. (Did you guys see the detail on that horse's face? And that horse's ass?)

Pokemon Picross is cool, but is it limited to just portraits of Pokemon? They said there's only 300-something puzzles, right?

I think that I'll actually grab Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon. I enjoy Mystery Dungeon games, and this is supposed to be the most robust Pokemon version.

Free, challenging DLC for Triforce Heroes is awesome. (Get that game, you guyssss!)

Still excited for Starfox, but it's so far away...

The Dragon Quest news is cool, I guess. Lots of RPG goodness, in general, but, unlike the rest of the internet, I don't really get excited about traditional RPGs. If Final Fantasy Explorers actually has fun combat, though, I'd play that. Looks fun.

And, finally, Cloud. Not really a "Nintendo" character (aside from some spin-offs), but the inclusion is cool for its significance.

@Hinph
I think the Mario Maker update is pretty essential. They're basically introducing level tagging, right? I don't know how long it will take until the console game can easily filter levels, but they've already created tags for Auto-Play and Music. That's huge! Tags like "Alternate Path" or "Hidden Blocks" would also prevent people from giving up on levels as easily.

@TheOldManFromZelda
Mario Tennis is actually $50, AND you can get $15 back from DELL. But, yeah, it does seem to have more stuff than the previews mentioned. Was the game finished at the time of the previews?

(Xenoblade also comes with a $15 rebate.)

@CPA Wei

Ah okay, thanks. I guess she'll be passing on these then, since she already played them. Another 100+ hours on a pre-played adventure does not sound like a good plan, ha ha.

There's supposed to be an actually new on on the NX, right? Or a rumor of such? And so her wait continues...

@Anand

Sweet, $15 bucks off?! Sign me up for that! We were getting Xenoblade anyway, this is a great deal. Thanks. :D

@gamewizard65

Haha, I was waiting for this reaction!

@J.K. Riki

This is pretty fun to watch.

As for DQ7, like @CPA Wei said, they redid the general feel of the game. It looked like the DS remakes on the PSX (sprite-based characters, kinda chunky environments, all overhead), and it's got an over-the-shoulder DQ8-style look on the 3DS (everything polygonal). There're also a few things restructured. DQ8 has more playable characters, dungeons, and no more random battles--everything's on the field!

I've been on a DQ kick lately so I'm extra excited. It means I don't have to hunt down an old copy of DQ7 to play on my chunky PlayStation, and it gives me a reason to revisit the classic DQ8.

The new one you're thinking of is DQ11, which is coming to 3DS and PS4. They're the same game, but the PS4 version is designed similarly to DQ8 while the 3DS one has DQ9-style visuals on the top screen, and overhead DQ5 (SFC)-style visuals on the bottom screen running simultaneously (!). It's a little hard to describe. It'd be cool if NX gets the up-ressed port though.

A New Challenger Approaches!: Cloud Strife – the legendary protagonist from the classic RPG game FINAL FANTASY VII – will enter the battlefield as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS in the future. Additionally, a special broadcast – the last one for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS – will be released in December. More information is available at the official Super Smash Bros. website.

So that December Smash presentation mentioned at the very end of the Nintendo Direct will apparently be the last Smash-specific presentation. I'm guessing it'll be a pretty big one, then. It doesn't necessarily mean we won't get more Smash news out of regular Nintendo Directs, but I'm guessing Smash DLC support will wind down in 2016. We did get a handful of new stages, dozens of Mii outfits, and four new characters in 2015 (and quite possibly more with Cloud looking ready to go ASAP and a few more unnamed extra character slots datamined from the last update).

Smash 4 is so good though, so I'm holding out hope that we keep getting more DLC regularly next year as well.

@nate38

Also they will likely announce the winners of the vote, too, right? Some fan vote thing? That was official, wasn't it?

@J.K. Riki Yeah. I'm guessing they'll say Cloud was a popular vote, or THE popular vote, or simply the most popular submission who was actually feasible to get in the game.

Pretty good direct, although they spent a bit too much time talking about Yokai Watch and other games that already released.
New Splatoon maps look really fun.
Xenoblade looks great.
Star Fox looks better than it did at E3.
Pokemon on VC finally.
Pokemon Picross - great idea, looks really fun but worried about f2p design.
FAST looks great.
M&L Paper Jam looks fun.
Twilight Princess HD looks good, but I'm in no rush to replay it. Someday I guess.
Fire Emblem - tempted to go for the collector edition. Not even the biggest FE fan but Nintendo going all out with this game, I love it.
Cloud in Smash is a pretty wtf moment... not a big fan of his, but this is a megaton for sure. Really looking forward to the December broadcast.

Agreed, I wonder if they actually responded to the game's lukewarm reception and tweaked the visuals, or if it's simply better footage this time around.

I'm still a bit worried the game's motion controls might end up being kind of wonky, but it seems like they won't necessarily dominate the experience anyway.

@TriforceBun I know the feeling. Since I wait for sales then I usually miss discussions as well, which can sometimes make it tough to find things to talk about on a forum like this. That's why I try to respond if I see someone talking about an older game, though if I hadn't played it recently then I might have forgotten it...

I've been totally out of the loop lately so I didn't even know this was happening until a few hours after it happened. I was pleasantly surprised. I never really cared for the motion controls in Twilight Princess and I stopped playing somewhere in the middle, so I'm excited for the remake. I'm also happy to hear it confirmed that the DQ ports are both coming west. I just hope NOA doesn't make us wait too long for Mother 3 on the VC. Cloud in Smash was a shocker to me. I'm a big FF fan, but I'm not sure I'd even put 7 in the top half of FF games, so I would've preferred someone else, but I see why they went that way. The stage looks cool though. I have to assume this means a NX port for the remake, which is cool.

@DeputyVanHalen

I think assuming an NX port of the remake is a way to set up dashed hopes and dreams. :P

We know nothing about the console, but history says Square will be like "yeahnokthanksbye."

EDIT: But maybe! Hey, you never know! :) I just meant it might be wise to assume "no" and hope possibly "yes" that's all.

Or we could just be reading into it too much and the reality is that Cloud is kind of in Final Fantasy Explorers so... hey! Counts as being on a Nintendo system!

I wouldn't rule out FF7 remake appearing on NX though after Nintendo managed to get DQXI to release on the NX as well as the PS4.

@CPA Wei
@J.K. Riki

I don't think it's guaranteed yet, but if NX is capable I don't see Square leaving games off it that they're also putting on XB1. FF7 remake is almost certain to come to XB1 and PC as well.

@DeputyVanHalen

I wish that were true, but sadly stranger things have happened. Like not getting stuff of the Wii U that was on pretty much every console and handheld ever, including phones. :P

We shall see!

I would like to see DQ11 on the NX, though, if only to play alongside my wife. It's too hard to share an RPG experience on the 3DS.

@J.K. Riki

DQ11 is actually kiiiind of confirmed for NX. Not sure of their exact wording on the game's unveiling, but everyone made it sound like they "all but" confirmed it.

@J.K. Riki
Yeah, we'll have a better idea of what to expect once we see what NX is. If it's roughly PS4 level and based on x86, I think it won't be left out on too much unless it turns out to totally flop. If it's way behind on tech and/or based on some weird architecture/OS that no one else uses, then the pattern will likely repeat.

So weird to see Zelda disappear for a year only to reappear with that clip looking identical to before. The apparent lack of any tea tables being upended just reinforces that there will be an NX version (for 2016).

I don't think we'll hear official confirmation of NX games from anyone until Nintendo formally unveil the system(s).

Honestly I think it would be just dumb not to move Zelda Wii U to the NX and make it a launch title. Just DO it. Yeah, you piss off a handful of Wii U owners, but you start the next system off on SUCH an amazing foot. And 99% of those Wii U owners will get over it. You stand to lose almost no one and possibly gain a ton.

Please, Nintendo! Please do the smart thing here!
