We're kicking off the Negative World March Madness: Third Party Edition, where our favorite non-Nintendo games go head to head and only one may prevail. The matchups are as follows:

Nothing too hard for me on this one. All laid out, pretty much I have a clear preference of franchise/game. Go Mega Man and Prof Layton!

Castlevania vs. Mega Man was kind of a hard choice considering I don't particularly care for either game. Layton vs. Order of Ecclesia was much harder to decide. But it came down to a great game which spawned on of my favorite series vs. a game amongst other greats in its' series.

Man, already some tough choices in this round. I hate to vote off Rondo of Blood so early, but I think Mega Man 3 edges it out. And I really liked Ghost Trick and want it to move on, but few games beat S3&K for me.

Are we talking about the SNES or TurboGrafx version of Rondo of Blood? Because if we're talking about the SNES version then my vote goes to Mega Man 3. If we're this is the TurboGrafx version, then Rondo of Blood is my favorite game in this quarter of the bracket.

And can I just not vote for matchups where I haven't played either game?

1. I once tried to buy a cheap used copy of Soul Calibur II for GCN, but when I tried to select Link on the character screen then the game would crash. And if I can't choose Link then what is the moppin' point? Promptly returned it and they didn't have another copy, so I've never actually played it. Not that it matters, FF VI beats just about anything, even if I did play it as III on SNES.
2. Never played that Castlevania game.
3. Never played Ghost Trick so Sonic by default.
4. I played a little of Illusion of Gaia and couldn't get into it.

5. Never played either, chose the one that looked more interesting.
6. Same as above.
7. Never played Lufia but I didn't really like Okami so I'd hope Lufia's better...
8. I didn't really like Mega Man X so that other game is probably better.

I would think you can do what you want but for scoring purposes I always preferred when folks voted on all options regardless of experience. There's a level of understanding everyone should have (i.e. hearing about a game in any level) and personally I'd always want people to vote anyway. Since these are more about our own personal experiences and not trying to be as objective as possible, not voting because you didn't play a game doesn't really make the poll results any better. Or so that's how I see it.

I'd prefer you vote anyway, even if you just defer to the higher seed as being more highly regarded by the Negative World community.

A--Oh baby, first match of the whole thing and it already has my all-time favorite 3rd-party game. Go FF3!
B--I really, really like Rondo of Blood, but MM3 is my favorite in the venerable series. Kinda sad that Rondo didn't go up against pretty much any other Castlevania.
C--Pretty close call, but Sonic 3 and Knuckles was a creative approach to game design.
D--Ooh, I like both of these as well; Gaia's a memorable and melancholy tale, but Conker's multiplayer gives it the edge.

C--I love Lufia 2! LOVE IT. Unfortunately, barely anyone here thinks it beats Okami (which I didn't love, to be honest). Oh well...
D--Mega Man X is one of those games I can easily go back and play through.

Had to abstain from voting on Layton vs. Castlevania. Haven't played either. Though Castlevania is probably a ton better as the one Layton game I have played didn't impress me at all.
