A strange time, though it looks like there's something going on for Europe too so maybe this is scheduled around that.

I don't have any predictions as I never really know what to expect from these.

New 3DS is a given, and so is Majora's Mask 3D, and probably Xenoblade... but I wish they would surprise us with a previously unannounced n3DS-exclusive title for the system's launch. I'm thinking a racing game, such as Excite Truck, WaveRace or F-Zero. That would get the ball rolling nicely for n3DS.

Hm, I'd actually prefer if there were less N3DS-exclusive stuff. I mean, it'll already sell well enough, why leave out those of us who don't feel the need to upgrade? I guess the slight power boost might give some games the edge, but I dunno.

@TriforceBun

What would be a neat New 3DS exclusive though would be if they announced GBA/SNES games to be made available on Virtual Console. With the added hardware performance, surely they'd be able to emulate those games?

Ah, well so not quite confirmed, but likely, fingers crossed!

I WOULD LOVE THAT.

A new F-Zero, or even a GX remake, with pumped up graphics and full 3-D 60 fps, holy cow.

@TriforceBun
Maybe this makes me a jerk but I want exclusives! There doesn't seem to be any point in releasing a more powerful system with new capabilities if they don't take advantage of it.

The normal 3DS should be able to emulate those with no problem. I knew people who loaded up their original DS systems with SNES and GBA games with those R4 cards or whatever they were called.

@nate38 My understanding is that it's difficult to emulate GBA games 100% properly in addition to also continuing to run all the OS features and sleep mode and stuff like that. That's why the Ambassador GBA games shut off all those extra features when you play them. You won't even show as online from your friend's lists. I don't know if this was an official word or just speculation, but it sounds plausible to me.

@deathly_hallows On the other end, I think it's pointless to release a system that's barely an improvement over the existing one.

I hope there aren't exclusive games, but I wouldn't care if it had an exclusive eShop like the DSi did.

@nate38

Yeah I guess I mean the problem lies in perfectly emulating them with all the bells and whistles their other Virtual Console games have. So suspend data/save states and all that which I imagine is why we haven't seen any GBA games with those features for those who got GBA games on their 3DS early on.

@VofEscaflowne

Probably why the GBA games on WiiU seem to work so much better.

@TriforceBun

Why would you not want to upgrade? Look at all this cool stuff the *new* system offers!

Grah, I want it NOOOOOOOOW....!

@Mop it up

As far as I know, Nintendo isn't using the 3DS hardware to play those GBA Ambassador games. It's using the DS hardware that's inside the 3DS, and having the "DS side" read the GBA games from the SD card. The 3DS basically becomes a DS when playing the GBA games - that's why all the functionality of the 3DS "extra" stuff is shut off when playing those titles. It's just like as if you loaded up a DS game on the 3DS.

If Nintendo did the GBA games *properly* on the 3DS, then it'd be able to run them just as easily as they do all the other VC games available on the system.

There shouldn't be any technical problems whatsoever to emulate GBA games on the 3DS, right? There's no argument in there is there? Would love if we could get these VC games cross platform.

@GameDadGrant

Where'd you read that? Doesn't make much sense at all for it to be set up that way. The DS didn't play GBA games and it didn't have an SD card slot, so why would they use a workaround like that?

I figured the GBA games didn't have that functionality because Nintendo was trying to save the 3DS ASAP and didn't take the time to make a prope emulator.

@GameDadGrant

The face tracking 3D is pretty sweet.

...Err yes it did.

Perfect emulation requires a system many times more powerful than the hardware it's trying to emulate, and the 3DS hardware seems to be right at that point where it's maybe powerful enough for GBA but maybe not. I know Nintendo like to do goofy things sometimes, but I think there's a reason why they're releasing GBA games on the Wii U instead of the 3DS. Sure, it could be argued they're doing that to try to boost its less popular system with more exclusive games, but I think it has more to do with it being much easier getting those games working on Wii U than 3DS.

@Shadowlink

Oh yea, I guess the original DS and DS Lite did after all. So I guess the DSi, DSiXL and 3DS still have that capability from a software standpoint, but just didn't have the necessary GBA slot built into the hardware? I assumed there was just a GBA chip in the DS/DS Lite that got removed for later iterations. I'm surprised homebrewers haven't figured out a way to load up any GBA ROM from the 3DS SD card then.

What a confusing situation Ambassador titles are, in general. Nintendo must have just been experimenting with stuff like using the DS functionality to play GBA games and, in the rush to figure out some bonus for early adopters, decided to just throw it in in a way that goes against their usual attitudes towards this stuff. Strange moment in the company's history.

Didn't the DS have a Mega Man Zero trilogy on it? Weren't those basically emulations, or were they ported?

So who's going to be on here whilst watching this?

Trying to decide if I should stay up that late. Would be cool to have a good old-fasioned NW Chat Party.

@Shadowlink

Not I! I'm going to work now! But I may try to listen/watch this thing live at work. Might be better for me to just wait though.

@GameDadGrant

If you or anyone hears that the 'new' 3DS is suddenly on sale (though I don't suspect such an immediate pre-order situation) then please text me or something so I can look into it after work in case I can't watch this there. Oh, anyone who knows me on Facebook or Twitter you can message me there.

I'm not even sure 100% yet that I want a new one (maybe like 80%) but if I get one, I want one day one. That's just how I roll. And who am I kidding, I'll probably just get one (price pending though). I wouldn't mind being able to semi-retire the 3DS XL and keep it pristine. Though I could always go for the non-XL version of the new one to have one good one of both... but I don't want to give up that big-ass screen... decisions... decisions.
