New 3DS Firmware update! Menu themes, and enhanced performance!

Just in time for some Smash 3DS partyin', Nintendo rolled out some menu themes for the 3DS today in a big ol' update. The link to all the info is here, but the update also gives these upgrades to your system, according to ZeldaInformer:

-Users can now use themes to customize the design and sounds of the HOME Menu

-Five themes are pre-installed and additional themes can be purchased from the Theme Shop

-Themes can be changed by using settings located within the HOME Menu settings

-A feature has been added that allows users to capture screenshots of their HOME Menu

-The Nintendo eShop Title Information page has been updated to provide easier access to any available videos, demos, user reviews, and other information.

The only kinda bad news is that only five of the themes are free, and they're all pretty basic ones (basically just different colors). To get the fancy Link Between Worlds one, you've gotta shell out a couple of bucks.

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

Went ahead and got the A Link Between Worlds theme. I'm digging this update, it's pretty awesome.

I got the Luigi theme for mine...fitting since I have the Mario & Luigi Year of Luigi 3DS XL. I like it!

I wish you could have the option to turn the music off. Some of these themes look good but the music is distracting. If you have me the option to turn the music off or have the original menu theme, I'd be all over these themes. As it stands, I'd have to hear the music first before I buy.

Can't you just turn down the volume while on the home menu?

$1.99 for a theme? Is this some of joke? I hate it when these companies do this crap.

Edited for a correction. I had "$2" in my mind and mixed up my numbers. Still I think that's pretty steep. This isn't a Nintendo exclusive thing. I can't stand Microsoft charging for similar things as well.

@PogueSquadron

Not that it'll help your opinion but I think it's $1.99.

@sirmastersephiroth Agreed, some of these are cute looking but I don't always want the Mario theme to play when I turn my 3DS on.

The thing is, I like the sound effects of the current menu. They are subtle. Most of these themes have themes that are not subtle at all.

@PogueSquadron

As mentioned above by @DrFinkelstein, the themes are $1.99 each. That is, the ones with the scrolling backgrounds and different chimes and music playing in the background.

The less "flashy" ones (like the ones that have a simple pattern or just change the menu color scheme) are free. The start-up menu for the Theme Shop also makes mention that you can download themes with Download Codes, which obviously means sometime in the future Nintendo will be giving themes away. Probably through promotions of certain games and/or Club Nintendo.

I don't have access to my 3DS this week.

Some pretty cool music! I like it.

I switched to the blue one to go with my blue 3DS.

@GameDadGrant The five single-colour themes are free but the pattern themes are 99 cents each.

You are all welcome.
How many Mario-themed themes do you need, Nintendo? And all with the same music?

@WrathOfSamus777

You lose the right to say things like this when you go into lurk mode for months at a time only to resurface when a popular game launches.

Even though I agree, I totally bought the Luigi theme and I like it.

Lol....ok first of all, I haven't been in lurk mode. I left here for awhile for my own reasons and my return has nothing to do with Smash Bros. coming out. Mere coincidence. Maybe I missed some of you guys........

Second, I've been working on my own blog in which I've been writing my OWN REVIEWS for games. Thus, I've been gaming quite a lot recently!

So shut yer.....face!

Just completed the update. Yeah, everything seems to run faster and smoother now. Especially getting on the eShop.

As for the themes, the character-based themes are $1.99. The rest are $.99. Nintendo should be offering these on Club Nintendo if they aren't already. All the character-based themes are Mushroom Kingdom related. One Zelda theme. No Metroid. I'm assuming Nintendo will be releasing more of these though. I MIGHT be tempted to pay for a Metroid theme.....if it's really nice. Might.

I might download a Metroid theme if it's cool looking. I'd insta-download a Fire Emblem one. But a theme like that is unlikely.

I wonder if they'd offer a Super Smash Bros. theme? That'd be an insta-download, too!

@GameDadGrant
Yeah, you'd think that they would have done a Smash Bros. theme since the game just came out instead of a bunch of Mushroom Kingdom themes. And maybe even offer the Smash Bros. theme for free if you buy the game day one or week one? That would have been nice.
