Nintendo UK possibly outed new Mario Kart 8 DLC. It shows some interesting stuff, some possibly Amiibo-related. Excitebike? F-Zero? Animal Crossing? Link? I like what I see! How about you?

Nintendo of America said:
Link, Isabelle and Animal Crossing Villager All Get Ready to Race

REDMOND, Wash., Aug. 26, 2014 – Two new downloadable content packs will take the world of Mario Kart 8 in directions the franchise has never seen before, while significantly expanding game-play options. The packs, which launch this fall and in spring of 2015, and are available for advance purchase starting Aug. 27 at $7.99 each (or $11.99 for both), deliver a ton of new content, including first-time crossover characters like Link from The Legend of Zelda franchise and both Isabelle and the Villager from the Animal Crossing series.

In addition to these two new downloadable content packs, a previously announced game update goes live Aug. 27 that adds a variety of new features, including three free Mercedes-Benz cars that players can race: the modern Mercedes-Benz GLA, the 300 SL Roadster from the 1950s and the legendary Silver Arrow of the 1930s. Go to http://ninten.do/6181WR6B to view a video of the in-game karts in action.

“More than 1 million Wii U owners in the United States alone are already enjoying the fun of Mario Kart 8,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Mario Kart 8 already includes the largest number of characters, karts and options of any Mario Kart game to date, and these amazing expansion packs give players even more choices.”

Each pack will contain two new cups, each with four courses, which, in total, increases the number of currently available courses by 50 percent. The DLC packs include classic courses like Wario’s Gold Mine from Mario Kart Wii, as well as new courses, some taking place in the worlds of The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing. New vehicles will also arrive with each pack, including the Blue Falcon kart representing the F-Zero franchise in the first DLC pack.

Mario Kart 8 owners who purchase both packs starting Aug. 27 will get access to eight new colors of Yoshi and eight new colors of Shy Guy to race with immediately. To purchase the packs in advance, users with a broadband Internet connection can click the new “Shop” icon in the game or visit the Nintendo eShop on Wii U.

The DLC packs are scheduled to include the following:

Pack 1: The Legend of Zelda X Mario Kart 8 (Release Date: November 2014) - $7.99

3 Characters: Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach, Link
4 Vehicles
8 Courses

Pack 2: Animal Crossing X Mario Kart 8 (Release Date: May 2015) - $7.99

3 Characters: Villager, Isabelle, Dry Bowser
4 Vehicles
8 Courses

Pack 1 + Pack 2 Bundle - $11.99

6 Characters: Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach, Link, Villager, Isabelle and Dry Bowser
8 Vehicles
16 Courses
As a bonus for purchasing both packs bundled or individually, buyers receive eight new colors for Yoshi and Shy Guy. Those who advance purchase both packs can begin using the Yoshi and Shy Guy characters immediately.

$12 for all of that? Incredible value, even when you factor in the 10% price hike us Canadians will most definitely have to pay.

Whoa, $12 for both is extremely reasonable...a good deal, even. I'll take it!

$12 for all of this isn't a good deal....it's the best price for any DLC, ever.

@missypissy Huh, interesting. So we can start using the Yoshi and Shy Guy colours tomorrow? I wonder if that means they are already on the disc... or maybe they will be added in along with the patch tomorrow.

@Hinph Just to make clear what I said since I've apparently been coming off as a hater lately, I don't think Nintendo have been being terrible with DLC and they could certainly be a lot worse with it like some companies are. I just don't think they've gone above and beyond all other companies with it.

Australian prices are $10 for each DLC and $16 for both. Those prices are perfect. I am sold.

Nintendo should learn from PT and have an F-Zero announcement in an ad IN the fucking game!!

Imagine, some banners or something in the F-Zero level say F-Zero UX 2015.

Win the intarnet with that shit!

The update is live. The Mercedes cars are great!

I pre-ordered both packs right away. I can't wait. THIS is how you do DLC.

@OrbitalBeard

Oh what? I was just about to go to sleep. Haha.

Edit: Everybody is using the Mercedes... it's quite hilarious.

How are the Mercedes karts in terms of stats? Do they seem to have unique stats or are they pretty much clones of karts we've already got?

They seem pretty well balanced... only used the Silver Arrow so far. I really like it.

I'm pretty sure they messed with the item balance with this patch. I don't seem to be getting only coins and single mushrooms when I'm in 5th place. In fact, I'm doing better online than I ever have... good.

@Hinph
Well that's good to hear. It's incredibly frustrating trying to fend off all the people using triple shells, piranha plants and fire flowers with a couple of dimes when you're caught up in the chaos of the lower ranks.

Not that I played all that much anyway, but it seems like it's time to play more MK. And I'll definitely buy the dlc, though I currently don't have the space for it.

Oh no, 2GBs for all the DLC?!? What am I going to do with my tiny fridge and all the Virtual Console games I've downloa....

.... oh wait, I have a 2TB external hard drive hooked up to my Wii U. Never mind, crisis averted. Or rather, no crisis ever existed.

Glad to see their aversion to "race to the bottom" pricing doesn't seem to be related to DLC. Crazy value.

Updated the OP with the official press release...crazy good value. For $12, I'll be getting both.

I have to say, this is kind of like MK8 getting a second life to me. Over the past couple months, I've been a little bit down on MK8, since I felt it didn't really add very much to the formula and I was not liking the cuts (no onscreen map, wonky item balance, no stat-tracking like before, no more tracks than usual). But with all these updates, the game's finally shaping up to be what I was hoping for, especially if the item balance thing is true.

It does make me think the initial version was kinda rushed out the door, though...no other major 1st-party games have had actual interface upgrades and new option windows.

This is what Nintendo should be doing with their once per generation games. Really helps the wait between games.

Edit: Still feel weird about Link though. Not sure I really want to see the series go in that direction.

Good update. Seems the online connects much quicker now, and the first thing I see when I start spectating is a pink Yoshi knocking a blue one off the road. Sweet.

Hm, I wonder if this debunks that screenshot with Birdo in it on the character selection screen? Probably not, since Nintendo teased Amiibo support for Mario Kart 8 at E3.

$12 for both packs is a great price.I'll plunk down the money once the first pack is on the horizon.
