Renegade Kid announces their latest game: Xeodrifter

Apparently this is an old-school, NES-style "Metroidvania" game that is making Jools very happy about making. They are even going so far as purposely using the NES's limited color palette to really drive home that old-school feel. Here are some early screens:

I guess Jools wasn't kidding when he tweeted a while back about how the next project will have "pixels 'n stuff." But he's super-happy about it!

Also, you can scan this QR code with your 3DS to get screenshots of the game in stereoscopic 3D on the handheld. Neat!

What say you, Negative World? Excited for Renegade Kid's latest project?

@GameDadGrant Hmm, that is bizarre. I feel like Treasurenauts has to be like 95% done right now. Weird.

Yeah sure there are games that are announced and cancelled, or never see the light of day due to studio closings or general disorganization. But Renegade Kid has been especially bad about this recently. It used to be that they would say "hey, we're making this game called Dementium", and then the game came out, but lately with them it seems like about vast majority of the game "announcements" they make are just hot air and there is no honest intention to ever bother actually making said game, they're aren't serious about following through, they're just blowing their own horn. In the case of Cult County, they announced it for 3DS, had a demo at Pax, put some 3-D screenshots on their website, and then once they pleasure of making the initial announcement and all the hype from fans passed... they ceased working on it all together, only to reboot it as a Steasm/XboxOne/PS4 game over a year later, showing nothing but the same demo area they had completed for the initial 3DS reveal and some concept art. After their ridiculous Kickstarted failed miserably they promised to keep the dream alive and finish the game no matter what, but of course... no they didn't work on it a lick. In the light of that, and the failure to deliver on the promised MOON CHRONICLES DLC, and now the quiet abandonment of Treasurenauts... I can't see how or why they should be taken seriously.

Basically, fool me once Jools... but this has gone too far. I've lost faith in them. I was once a huge fan, I'll still go on record stating that Dementium 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. But I'm a lover scorned. Announcing Cult County as a spiritual successor to Dementium 2 basically just to taunt and tease me was cruel and usual. Fuck them. For reals. No way am I getting excited about this "Metroidvania" game, it's not real, the cake is a lie.

@Zero

I thought this too (and everyone else as well), so that's why the timing of this announcement bothers me. The fact that this game is "almost finished" too makes me wonder how long they've been sitting on Treasurenauts.

@deathly_hallows

I've never been as high on Renegade Kid as some people here have been. They do good work, but their games just don't appeal to me all that much. I wonder how much the Razor game falling through is affecting their funding...and if they're going to be okay. Jools is a smart programmer, but they really need a PR person to help them out, because Jools is terribad at that.

Sad thing is the Treasurenauts demo was a lot of fun. I was really looking forward to playing it with Karen. Download Play co-op!

I know everyone SAYS Renegade Kid never finishes / releases games but...

And there was much rejoicing in the streets!

I remain skeptical until it's actually been released and we have some reviews impressions.

The last game I bought from Renegade Kid was MOON Chronicles and that game ended after 20-30 minutes and then promised "to be continued" with DLC, except RK never made the DLC, and probably never will. So what will the catch with this game be?

I don't see why there would be a catch. Moon Chronicles was kind of a weird experiment of bringing that game to digital download but this is just a straight up built from the ground up eShop title.

Someone's grumpy! I recommend a play-through of Dementium II and see if the depression has been alleviated by morning tomorrow.

@Zero
There is nothing weird or experimental about releasing a game in episodic format, plenty of other developers are able to pull this off, RK just doesn't feel the need to finish what they start, they like to make promises but then screw over the fans when it comes time to deliver.

I dunno, guess I didn't follow it closely, but I always thought the DLC was "if the game does well..." Which of course it didn't.

What else haven't they finished? Treasurenauts is mostly finished from what I hear, and coming soon enough.

@Zero
Nah they pretty much promised that Season 1 would be the DS game it in it's entirety, remastered in 3-D. Season 2 was supposed to be all new content that continued the story. Look the product page is still up even though it's obvious Jools has completely abandoned the project (just like Treasurenauts and Cult County), some poor kid could read this and then spend money on the game thinking that they'd get a lot more than a 20 minute demo for their $8.

But Treasurenauts definitely wasn't abandoned. It's basically done. I've played it!

Cult County wasn't really abandoned so much as never got off the ground. I know they want to do it eventually but they just couldn't get the funding.

@Zero
They couldn't get the funding for the PS4/Xbox One version that they announced over a year after they announced the 3DS version that they had no intention of making. It's frankly bizarre IMO. Why announce games you don't intend to make? Obviously lots of games get cancelled for various reasons, but they're a small studio that doesn't have the bandwidth to make like 5 games at once, yet they announce them as if they're real projects, not "hey we might make this some day", they send out press releases and get posts up on NWR and Kokaku etc. acting like they're all excited about this hot new project, coming this year! But in reality they will most likely never release this game. If Xeodrifter comes out it will be the first game they've released in the last 4 they've announced, that's a 25% completion rate. Meanwhile does anyone ever expect them to come out with the next 3 episodes of MOON Chronicles Season 1? Nope. But the game is still on the eShop, and it still says the episodes are coming, and they're product page is up, but it's all a lie.

I actually do expect them to release pretty much everything that they have announced. Eventually.

Launching next week for $9.99.

Price is a little...pricey. I like the idea of the game, but I'll wait on a sale.

Sweet! I'm going to wait to buy any more games until after Christmas, though. So Jools will have to wait to get my money. Or rather, the Gift Card money I assume I'll get that I will use to "purchase" an pre-paid eShop card, which I will use to download this game.

No way, the 3DS will be an obsolete system by the time they get around to finishing those MOON Chronicles episodes, the eShop will probably be closed. And Cult County? I doubt it. Maybe in some form on PC or PS6 in 10 or 20 years? The 3DS game they announced like 3 years ago will never be made.

@ludist210
I'll wait for reviews, no trust in Jools anymore, RK is not a company I support like I did in the old days.

Wonder how long it will take for them to get it over to PAL territories. I'm still waiting for Mutant Mudds on the Wii U over here. Bah!
