Renegade Kid announces their latest game: Xeodrifter

Apparently this is an old-school, NES-style "Metroidvania" game that is making Jools very happy about making. They are even going so far as purposely using the NES's limited color palette to really drive home that old-school feel. Here are some early screens:

I guess Jools wasn't kidding when he tweeted a while back about how the next project will have "pixels 'n stuff." But he's super-happy about it!

Also, you can scan this QR code with your 3DS to get screenshots of the game in stereoscopic 3D on the handheld. Neat!

What say you, Negative World? Excited for Renegade Kid's latest project?

I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but Renegade Kid have started to typecast themselves as the sidescrolling pixel art guys lately. I love me the retro stuff and the pixels, but still.

I read this earlier, and I'm...not sure how I feel about this one. It looks decent enough, but I've yet to play a single Renegade Kid game that was more than just "okay" in my book.

Have you not played Dementium II?

@GameDadGrant

I have not. I've heard it's good, but FPS is not my kind of game...(plus my backlog is close to 80 games right now...no desire to pile on more than I won't play for ages)

@ludist210

FPS is not my style either, but no worries. Dementium II is more survival-horror than anything else.

Too bad you didn't dig Mutant Mudds, though. I felt that had some really fun, retro-style action-platforming that really got the vibe of the games from our youth down pat.

I don't blame you if the other games from them fell into the "just okay" pile. Bomb Monkey, ATV Wild Ride and (from what I've heard of it) Planet Crashers were all solid enough games, but nothing truly AMAZEBALLZ-outstanding.

Still, I don't think there is an actual, legit *terrible* game from the studio. I'm keen on how Treasurenauts turns out.

They should finish more games and "announce" fewer.

I like pixels.

I read this as "Xenodrifter," which I guess is what Xenoblade has done to me!

...Which would still be a better title than "Xenoblade Chronicles X."

I think that could apply to all game companies.

For those keeping score, Renegade Kid (a tiny outfit) has four announced titles they need to finish (this, Moon Chronicles additional content, Treasurenauts, and Cult County...if that ever sees the light of day) and they're self-publishing all of these games as far as I can tell.

Yeah. And it looks like Treasurenauts is being put on hold in order to focus on this new game.

I think I'd rather them finish a game and release it before moving on to the next, but maybe there is some reason that we aren't privy to that prevents that.

Really? Odd. Because based on what they want Treasurenauts to be, it looks done...not sure what else they can add.

@GameDadGrant Is? When I played Treasurenauts at PAX it felt pretty close to done, and I believe that I was told it was pretty close to release, so... I don't think they would put it on hold at this point. I assume it is releasing soon...

I think something was said about that in their blog...I'll see if I can dig up the quote. OrbitalBeard was the one that pointed it out to me. Maybe he can shed some light on what exactly was said about Treasurenauts.

@ludist210, @Zero

Here's the quote that sounds like Treasurenauts is on hold, or is being delayed. Check it:

Jools' Blog said:
"The first thing I expect many people might think is, “I thought you were working on Treasurenauts!” Yes, well, I have a confession to make. We were working on Treasurenauts – and it was progressing really well – then, one day I got a bee in my bonnet to make a metroidvania game."

"Before I get into the details our new game, I feel as though I should mention that Treasurenauts is still going to happen. I am really excited about Treasurenauts, and look forward to returning to it. I feel that I should also mention that we are not actively working on Cult County or the Razor game that we announced."

"And don’t worry; we will get back to Treasurenauts once Xeodrifter is completed."

So yeah. I mean, Treasurenauts is still going to come out, but from the sounds of it, it's not going to be soon. Or "on time." This new game is going to take precedent. For better or worse.

@GameDadGrant

That's...stupid. Sorry, but it is (and I'm not particularly interested in Treasurenauts). Basically, it reads like this: "I don't want to make Treasurenauts anymore right now. Sorry, it's almost finished though!"

(EDIT: The Razor game is apparently dead) Good gravy! Jools needs to stop. Seriously.

Agreed. Regardless of which game happens to turn out that best or interests me the most it's not cool announcing something, making progress and then just announcing something else replacing the first game out of the blue like this.

Haha, and he wants us to support his Kickstarter projects? I hope he doesn't start another one because it'll be like "sorry I don't feel like working on this right now even though gave me your money." I enjoyed Mutant Mudds but come on.

Really? I don't see it like that. I can think of plenty of game companies that just announce a game, and then make it. Take Yatch Club Games for example, they didn't announce Shovel Knight, and then show it off at Pax a bunch, and try to get gamers all hyped, only to announce something else and then forget all about Shovel Knight leaving it to languish and eventually died half-finished.

Jools seems to love to announce games, but he's not that into finishing them.

@deathly_hallows

I think we're both at the same conclusion, just thinking of it from different angles, because I don't disagree with what you're saying. But I think a lot of game companies do exactly what you're saying.

Take Gearbox and Alien: Colonial Marines. They'd been hyping it since, what, 2008? Before it was even in active development! But wait, Borderlands 2, and...oh crap, we have to launch an Alien game? Shoot...here, other random studios. Do this for us for less money. What? Quality? No, just do it. Oh, the game stinks? Gosh, I sure don't know why...blame Sega.

Or see StarCraft: Ghost as another example. Hyped, then quietly canned...supposedly.
