It pains me to say it, but Mega May has sort of been a letdown. Here's hoping Mega Man V can rocket punch the disappointment right in its deflating testicles.
I just downloaded Mega Man IV last night, played through Bright Man's stage. It was alright.
I have good memories of V. I just hope "we" haven't been overhyping it. It's a good original Mega Man game, but it's not the second coming or anything.
It's good. It's definitely a step up from the other GB games. I wouldn't quite put it up there with the Holy Trinity of the NES games (2, 3, and 4), but it's not far off. Disappointed again that there's so much slowdown, but I guess that's just the way these GB games are.
I really like the Super Duper Mega Arm. It's not as cheese as the charge shot, and it has some fun extra functions and upgrades. Speaking of, how exactly does the Clobber Hand work? It seems to activate at random, and for random durations.
The Stardroid weapons are a very good bunch, pretty creative stuff or improved takes on classics, but it seems like there's not much of a weakness chain going on. A couple of the weapons seem to be strong against almost every boss, some weapons aren't strong against any, and a few bosses don't seem to have any weakness at all. Mega Man 2 had a similar looseness to its Roshambo, but it still had a pretty clear path. Mega Man V is like hey, just get the Photon Missile or the Salt Water or the Bubble Bomb and you're set, buddy!
Good set of bosses, too. The Stardroids themselves were a decent bunch, and the extra bosses and minibosses were pretty neat. It was nice seeing the four Mega Man Killers together, even if Enker and Quint are still totally lame.
It's funny, this is the one game in the franchise that I didn't bother trying to figure out boss weaknesses. I always just ran through with just the Mega Arm, lol.
Man, this game is so good. It's bringing back so many memories....and surprisingly, they still hold up! The level designs are quite clever, and make good use of the new abilities Mega Man has this time around. The bosses are fun too, even if they are a bit on the easy side. (or my muscle memory is keeping things easier, not sure yet)
I freakin' love this game - probably my favorite in the series. Mega Man IV is pretty close, though...
I finally started picking up the GB MM games today (after having beaten Wily's Revenge a year or two back). Played through MMII in one sitting yesterday. After hearing lots of horrible things about it, I though it was...okay-ish. Something about it is very non-compelling though--probably has something to do with the extremely easy difficulty. For the first time ever, I beat five (!!) Robot Masters and their levels without dying a single time. Felt very short and easy; the level design and soundtrack were both super-generic.
Otherwise, I thought the controls were decent enough and there was a good variety in the enemies. It was weird how they handled the Robot Masters in the game though.
Currently doing MMIII--it's much better, and it's great to hear the classic themes again. Excellent difficulty and gameplay balance, even if it still kind of feels like a more claustrophobic version of its big console brother. Although I did think Skull Man's stage was better-realized than on the NES.
I'm really liking playing all these GB Mega Man games after growing up on the NES ones, but I can't really seem them overthrowing any of the NES ones yet. Maybe 6.
