New Fatal Frame game announced for the Wii U
News reported by

Tecmo Koei and Nintendo are collaborating once again for a new Fatal Frame, and it appears to be a completely new game. No real details out yet, nor a release date or even a title.

Or any images, for that matter. The image below is from Fatal Frame IV on the Wii.

A live action film, novel, and comic are also planned. Interesting.

Here is to hoping that Nintendo realizes that it needs as many darn Wii U games as possible and doesn't keep this one held up in Japan like they did with Fatal Frame IV!

This series should work quite well with the Gamepad. They would be really stupid to ignore North America this time around as the Wii U needs all the help it can get.

Hell, my sister loves the Fatal Frame games and she is somebody who picks up a game controller once a month.

@Anand
I'm kind of intrigued by AR, and I like the Fatal Frame style so I'd probably enjoy it, but from what I hear it's kind of a paradox; the gameplay works better in a well-lit environment, but the atmosphere is obviously better in the dark. I'm definitely getting the game at some point, though.

@r_hjort I can't tell if this is sincere enthusiasm or sarcasm.

@DrFinkelstein Wow, someone has been sharpening his claws. I like this new 'tude.

My enthusiasm is entirely sincere, and these news made my day.The Fatal Frame 2 remake for Wii blew me away, and I've been dreaming of a Wii U game in the series since then.

Between this new Fatal Frame game (provided it comes to NA/EU/AU), the Xenoblade successor and Nintendo finally giving us western Mother fans some recognition by releasing Earthbound on VC, I feel truly spoiled as a Wii U owner. Things could only get better if Nintendo for some damn reason went and got Rika Suzuki's gang together for a final Kyle Hyde/Ashley Mizuki Robbins game in the old Cing style.

@r_hjort Ah, that's good to hear. It was tough to tell since you're typically pretty mild-mannered, and that was the first time I'd seen a post like that from you. That's the kind of thing I expect from someone like Carlosrox!

Hahaha! I suppose it could be seen as kind of out-of-character. The only other times I've had similar reactions would be, well, the ones I listed above. Earthbound on VC and seeing X for the first time. Part of why I went all caps lock on you guys is that I honestly didn't know if I dared hope for an announcement like this. I mean, I'm sure I'll go nuts when I see the next Zelda, but I also know there is a Zelda coming at some point.

Seriously, we can't allow that to happen this time! I really think everyone interested in this game or the series as a whole should raise a collective voice anywhere possible to show Nintendo that we're interested. Even those of us who aren't overly interested but want a more open localization policy in general could join as far as I'm concerned. Now, it's obvious that a big company such as Nintendo have other ways of determining what to do rather than listening to a vocal minority, but at this (presumably) early stage maybe we could at least be one of the straws on the camel's proverbial back, or something else that makes more sense. I'll be sending emails to NOE, NOA and Tecmo later today for sure, just to show my excitement, and hope that it does something. Anything.

Maybe it will be a digital-only release, would that be okay? I frankly don't see why more companies don't do that with on-the-fence imports. Saves a HUUUUUUUUUGE amount of money, and minimizes risk like CRAZY. Still a risk, but a much, much smaller one.

@-JKR-
I'm the kind of guy that wants my games on physical media and like boxes cluttering my bookshelves, but I'd obviously welcome a digital only release if the alternative was not getting the game at all. That being said, is it possible that the amount of Nintendo gamers that can or usually do buy games via digital download is small enough that publishers figure the cost of producing discs and boxes will be compensated for by an increase in potential audience? Pure speculation here for the sake of being devil's advocate.

Hopefully NOA learned their lesson from the whole Xenoblade debacle. The game went on to sell more in North America than Japan and Europe combined... and that was as a silly Gamestop exclusive.

Seeing as how the Wii U is now officially performing worse than the Sega Dreamcast, they can't exactly ignore quality software.

That's exactly what I'm hoping, that the state of the Wii U will force them to see every new game investment as a worldwide release by default. While Fatal Frame may not be a franchise as big as Resident Evil or anything, I think having an exclusive survival horror game from such a renowned series on the system could serve as an extra incentive for people to buy a Wii U. Not by itself, but in addition to the Smash Bros, the Mario Karts, the Bayonettas and the Xs that are on their way, perhaps. Especially if this new Fatal Frame will handle the Gamepad exactly the way everyone wants and expects it to, turning it into a real life Camera Obscura. That's the sort of cool functionality that sets the Wii U apart from the competition.

Did it now? I suppose that should send a clear message to Reggie.

According to VGchartz.com (lol VGchartz, etc.) Xenoblade sold 400k on US and 3900k on Japan and Europe combined. With 70k sold in the rest of the world. I actually bought my copy off of Nintendo the first day it came out. That was actually two years ago and I still haven't played the game.

I was already dis-enamored with Wii by the time this game came out, in other words, I could give two shits less about the Wii since Nintendo was the first one to not care about it anymore, why should I. Nintendo already made their money and dipped, like a pimp. The only decent games released between Xenoblade and Donkey Kong Country Returns (an 18 month window aprox.) was an insipid and bloated Zelda and a solid Kirby platformer. And of course between Zelda and DKCR, there was nothing noteworthy, or barely anything at all from Nintendo, let alone third parties. That was part of the issue regarding Operation Rainfall; Nintendo already had a couple of games localized that they refused to release even though they had nothing on the horizon.

That was one more of the reasons many people were fed up with Nintendo but I don't blame them. Me though, I don't get mad, they can always win me back as long as they don't do anything like employ children on their manufacturing facilities or have Mario in blackface.

Nintendo is so weird. With next to no 3rd party support, they clearly need everything they can get. Why leave anything Japan only at this point?

I am not surprised. Fucking Nintendo.

@Zero

Totally. Still makes me wonder why they made a push to get this series exclusive; while it's not accurate to say they've been sitting on it, they certainly aren't getting the most out of their investment.

Still hoping they'll bring this one over, though.

I'm hoping this is one of those "we haven't officially announced anything yet so we'll deny it" situation that Nintendo often does.
