Hail to thee, O Xenoblade!
The game we all hold dear
For thou art full of countless quests
And treasures, hopes and cheer

A game we all saw to the end
The story now complete
We sing your praises far and wide
You truly are elite.

Wait, did I say we have all beaten the game? *cough*
Well, I did pour around thirty hours into it. That's about the length of an average Zelda game, so I definitely got my money's worth, right? RIGHT?

The truth is, I love Xenoblade. I was one of the people who imported the game from Europe back before the rainfall operated on it, officially birthing it from Gamestop's North American womb.
Heck, I even possibly gave North America its first Reyn Time reference in the form of comic GOLD. A reference I knew would fall on deaf ears, yet one that was important to all of humanity.

GOLD, I tells ya!

Yes, I loved Xenoblade so much that I even championed it on the 22nd episode of the Negative World Podcast. I had nothing but wonderful things to say about the game. The huge, exploration-heavy Japanese RPG. The wonder of wonders. The miracle of miracles!

This is where the game is kept in my house.

Unfortunately, not long after my stellar performance on the Podcast, Shulk and company came across a humongous, vertical forest city populated by little bouncy anime mascots. That's when the sheer enormity of the game made my mind snap. That was when the Dark Times began. THAT was when I stopped playing Xenoblade Chronicles.

This photo was taken the exact instant I stopped playing.

Over the time that followed, I have often been reminded of my failure to continue the game. Due to this failure, I have secretly hoped that Monolith Soft's upcoming Wii U game, “X” isn't a direct sequel to Xenoblade! How awful is that?
Similarly, if you were to take a look at my 3DS Puzzle Swap collection, you will notice that the Xenoblade Puzzle hasn't been given much love. Yes, I gave more attention to the Concentration Training puzzle, and I have never touched that game in my life.

I still ended up with more pieces than I had hoped for. Seen here, with Prawn Mario.

This is my cry for help. A few days ago I attempted the impossible: To return to a giant JRPG after a two year respite. I now have no clue how the fighting mechanics work, though I once recall having mastery over all of its intricacies. Now I simply mash the buttons and hope for success. From mastery to mashery.

I must admit, I forgot some other things about the game...

What have I done? Has the sheer immensity of this game been its downfall in my eyes? That same immensity that once had me shouting from the rooftops?
I yearn to play this game again, and I'm willing to bet there are a few others in the same boat. I dare not start the game anew since I am still quite familiar with the story, and I don't have the time to devote to retreading old ground. I simply require a refresher course on the game's battle mechanics. I am ready for that course!

Who shall join me?

I pledge to beat you, Xenoblade!
I shall right an awful wrong
Two years of ignoring you
Is simply far too long.

I shall give your rightful due
This is an honest vow
Never before has it been
Such Reyn time as is now.

@Mop it up

Sure. I was kicking some level 85 ass with monsters at level 79 but I know the bosses are much tougher.

@DrFinkelstein The final boss level is 85. It will show as "???" and will always have a red background, no matter what level you are.

Right now I'm just buying up intermediate art books and I'm gonna tackle them once my team (Melia, Reyn, and Sharla) have their stuff upped the best.

Should I consider using another team? One with Shulk perhaps? Or Dunban or Fiora?

depends on who you feel comfortable with.... most of the big boss fights I stuck with my default team of Shulk/Reyn/Sharla... I had great chemistry with them, both sharla and Shulk (whom I used) can heal and Reyn was the perfect Tank. Other team members did bring more power to the table but I felt safer controlling a person that could do both and having a healer and a tank join me... Plus I felt using the main guy for the final battle was important... but that's just me..

Your last point was one I kinda wondered too..... I like who my lead is now. She's been a big one for me since her joining, but having Shulk there feels right story-wise. I haven't used him in a bit though and he has weak ether-magic or whatever it seems like. I guess that's not really true though.

@DrFinkelstein
You're ready to go. Do itttttt!!
Do you fear completing the game? Do ittttttt!!!

Like Smerd, I used the original three for the final battle, controlling Shulk. It was glorious!

@ploot

I kinda do... and I want to go to bed. But I will give it a shot now. How long is the "post-dragon" portion anyway?

@DrFinkelstein
Hmm, it will take you at least an hour or so. Probably more. It's totally great, bedtime is later!

Edit - Maybe two hours. There're lots of cutscenes.

Ugh yeah? Then this has to wait till tomorrow. I flew into Chicago early yesterday morning, only to drive 75 miles west for business, and I only just flew back home today and arrived home two and a half hours ago. I'm tuckered out and I need to get up at the normal work time in 8 hours from now. So bedtime and The Walking Dead get it tonight. I will tackle this tomorrow. I've got my base three with their gems and armor picked out. I'm sure there's better stuff out there but I am not looking around for the best of the best. It is what it is. I slapped some Spike gems on Shulk and Reyn and Sharla's got some Agility on her. Reyn has max HP and Shulk has some nice gems too.

I will do my best to complete this tomorrow. We record the next podcast thursday and I would love to talk about this game in a past tense....

@DrFinkelstein

Well? Have you beaten this monster of a game yet?

@Smerd

Unfortunately no. I beat some handheld titles plaguing me and was doing Paper Mario. Then DK came out and besides gaming, life has been incredibly stressful and busy. Top it off, I need to grind because I couldn't get past the first of the final boss battles (technically the second). So I'm kinda bummed and steam is lost. But I'll get it back. I need to find a good place to grind.

@DrFinkelstein

bionis leg... where all those tall rocks/platforms are that tower over a huge lake. There are these ape like dudes.. pack of 8 or so on the grassy hills....they give out good experience..

You will be ready soon :)

@Smerd

Ah okay, good call. I was hanging out under the bridge but those things are way under my level now. I'm at like 80? Or something and I need guys who are closer to me. Those Green Feris' from Satori Marsh were giving good experience and certain owl things but it was kinda hard getting consistent spawns.

You might be ready to go back to the High Entia city

@mrbiggsly

Alcamoth? I went there and even though I'm close to their level, I couldn't do much damage at all. I feel like I'm forgetting the trick.

@DrFinkelstein

The Aura Monado skill most likely.

I got side-tracked by Tropical Freeze at the same point you did. Was going to finish off Colony 6 for the first time (only two sections remain, just one level each) but then I started hunting down other things and lost all steam. Probably finish off the Colony 6 stuff tonight then beat the game shortly there after.

@DrFinkelstein
When did you last improve all your equipment and setup your gems and all that? Agility Gems are real good so make sure to get the 50% bonus from them. I think it was 50%...

@Pokefreak911
Yeah, upping to the max 50% agility REALLY helps.
