And on the last day of 2013 the world was given not one... but two podcasts from the Negative World crew.
Joe and Stephen dive into the world of Licensed Gaming in this episode of Negative World Euphonic. The first set is music coming from the early days of gaming, the NES and Gameboy era. The second set come from the evolution into the SNES that came later.
What do you think of the songs picked for this episode? Let us know!
Negative World does not own the rights to any of the songs featured on the podcast. This is a non-profit appreciation podcast and the rights belong to their respective owners.
EDIT: Donald Duck in Maui Mallard is the PAL name. Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow is the NTSC name. Confusing I know. Glad the music got in however. I did in fact start moving and grooving when it came on.
Maximum Carnage is one of my favorite underrated games.
It's a brilliant challenge that only emerges once you get the hang of it. Spider-Man has an enormous moveset, probably dozens of moves, and the amazing thing is that there is always a time and place to use each move. It's SO satisfying once you get good at it.
Once you understand when to use each move you're punching, throwing, swinging on webs, tackling, etc. You're bouncing all over the screen like a ninja. You really feel like Spider-Man, as best you can in a 2D game. Sounds like you ended up with the opposite impression.
The music is pretty great, but my favorite track is "Supervillains." Even if it is a pretty blatant rip off of Black Sabbath's "Mob Rules."
Yea, I remember playing the game and discovering that there were a ton of moves, but, I could never figure out the right times to use them. Perhaps one day I will.......... one day ....
Actually I recall it being fairly short, maybe even shorter than your average NES Mega Man game. I think there were 8 total stages? 1 intro, 2 sets of 3 (which you could do in any order) and 1 final? Hmm. It was a long time ago though, so my memory might be off.
Challenge-wise it probably fell on the side of the later NES Mega Man games. Not too bad. Though I never actually beat it. Got to the end boss fight and couldn't figure out what to do...
Fun episode! I'm honored that some of the songs I submitted were used, and that I inspired Joe to select Game Boy Batman music for his 8-bit song. You two had some good choices that I was not familiar with.
I also wasn't familiar with Maui Mallard's music until now. It sounds great! Good one Pokefreak.
If I may, let me provide some feedback. I feel like the discussions between each song sometimes draw out a bit longer than may be necessary. Considering I listen to the Euphonic podcast mostly to listen to the game music, I wonder if it would be better to limit the discussions a bit further? You guys have some good conversations but sometimes stray a bit off topic for a bit too long. At least, it seems that way to me.
That's my feedback. If you think the discussions are fine as is and that I'm just being nitpicky, feel free to ignore me.
I think you mentioned in a previous Euphonics thread that you don't want to list the games mentioned in each episode (even if they're spoiler-tagged) in order to motivate people to give the podcast a listen. However, the chapter art does contain images for the three user-selected games, so that's an easy way to tell the games anyway (though I don't always remember which games you and Joe picked since there are no images for those). Just wanted to say I like the chapter art used that way!
I am responsible enough to accept criticism, lol, but mainly because I know you're being constructive.
As for the chapter art, I'm glad you like how I do that. It's been an intentional thing for those who bother to download the podcast version that takes longer to make, it's like a fun cheat sheet for those who care. The photos are not from the same places as the songs necessarily, so it's not always an insta-clue either if you don't recall the thread.
Super music in this episode, especially that BONKERS Silver Surfer song. And that video above is just crazy. Even though I watched it, I don't believe my lying eyes. Can't be real! Anyway, great episode gentlemen, as always. You guys rock.
Another bit of Trivia for Maui Mallard. It was originally released on the Mega Drive/Genesis and later on PC and Gameboy and there was going to be a sequel, but because the first one wasn't marketed well it never happened.
