Just in time for All Hallows Eve, it's another Negative World Euphonic episode!
What's creepier than a good ol' Town theme? What's more pleasant than a Spooky theme? What a sec... Swap that. In this episode Joe and Stephen explore the comforting nature of Town Themes and the tension-filled aspect of Spooky themes in video games.
What do you think of the songs picked for this episode? Let us know. There are particularly some subjects we'd love your thoughts on, so please listen and please comment!
Negative World does not own the rights to any of the songs featured on the podcast. This is a non-profit appreciation podcast and the rights belong to their respective owners.
There were some verbal errors regarding who submitted the second and third songs in each category. Some of these were caught before posting and others not. My apologies to those who were swapped and to the listeners who might be confused while listening. Below are the correct results for the swapped results.
Town Themes:
02 - Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal's Viridian/Pewter/Cerulean/Saffron City/Cinnabar Island by Mop It Up 03 - Castlevania II: Simon's Quest's The Silence of Daylight (Town Theme) by TheOldManFromZelda
Spooky Themes:
02 - Resident Evil REmake's Safe Haven by Zero 03 - Super Mario World's Ghost House by GameDadGrant
Ah fudge. I thought I caught that. I had accidentally switched around the names for the Number 2 and Number 3 slots. So I had to go back and fix it but I didn't have time to give the whole thing a nice solid listen through again.
You should have PM'd me Zero that way I could have fixed it silently without anyone noticing.... though to anyone who gets this from iTunes, I'm sure it's already there. Sorry MopItUp! We caught the issue part way through the episode and my apparently subpar editing didn't get it all.
Andrew, make my life easier, give me some timecodes man! I'll fix this for sure if given the chance.
Castlevania II is actually the easiest of the 3 NES games! Just find a map online, and follow that. The gameplay, at least to me, is solid. The mansions are sweet, and the night and day mechanic is great.
And don't forget to equip the red crystal to get that tornado!
There's lots to accomplish in the towns. Gotta keep it upbeat to keep you moving. Find the church, guys peddling their wares, hookers looking for some fun, etc. Plus, night time can happen in the town, and that's when the zombies come out...
I actually am one of the people that liked to control the duck and mess with my sister. Wooooo.
Well, I've already made the two edits necessary and did so without elongating or shortening the time of the show. Thus, I will be able to easily swap it later. Zero/MopItUp, my apologies for the confusion. I wont be able to get it done before I'm out the door for work this morning, but first thing when I get home today I'll do that.
Okay, I hope this isn't messing anything up but I'm off to work now and the mp3 version is corrected. The m4a is not yet. The mp3 still has 4 minutes till it's uploaded. Enjoy!
To clarify I swapped the names of who picked number 2 of both themes and number 3 of both themes. So I had caught most of the issues. That's why your spooky pick got mixed with mopitups town pick.
Two separate switches. I probably would have screwed it up fully but the 4th slots are always Joe, I'm always 5th, and Triforce bun had just so happened to get both 1st slots. Couldnt swap him if I tried.
Oh ok. I guess I know what one of the spooky songs is going to be!
Hmm. Do I actually want to LISTEN to it though? I usually listen to these podcasts during my late night, solo walks... not sure if I need to hear that song, ha ha.
Snap. I didn't mean to spoil. I thought you had listened through.
The Spooky songs are indeed quite spooky. The songs Joe and I picked are down right troubling in some ways, imo lol. I dare you to listen on your walk. ;)
I'm only at like the 4th town song I think? No big deal. I always assume that my choices are so awesome that clearly one or the other will make it anyway.
I got to the creepy songs. Albeit I listened to my song while at the gym, a very not creepy place. But it got me thinking about my past experience with the series, and that started creeping me out a bit...
Yeah, because I started thinking about my history with that franchise. This history includes something revolving around the first game that I played in that series, which is the game the song I submitted was from, and which I had a kind of weird experience with during a sort of dark time in my life and well... it's kind of odd thinking back on that, to be honest. Not your fault of course, I chose the song. I actually quit playing the game at that time because I just wasn't the right mental state to deal with it, and didn't think I would ever play it again, to be honest, but then I came back to it a few years later when I was in a better spot in life and had a much more positive experience with it. Now I love the series (though a few of the recent games haven't been that great) but for awhile there it was a very conflicted thing for me and I was almost at the point where I just wrote it off as something other people love but is just not for people like me.
I guess what I learned was "don't play dark, creepy games when you're already in a very stressed out / depressed period in your life", heh. BUT... the whole experience with this game also taught me that you can get through rough times in life and move onto better times, and enjoy the things that you thought you would never be able to, which is an important life lesson.
Yep, I was pretty much thinking all of this at the gym. And then I started thinking of my experiences with the other games in the series, which were a lot less conflicted, and mostly just "really good". It became one of my favorite series, although again, not too happy with its current direction.
(Sorry for being so vague, trying not to spoil any song choices... although anyone who read all of that probably knows what franchise I'm referring to here...)
