Wii U Gets A $50 Price Drop Effective September 20th

Beginning on September 20th, the Wii U Deluxe model will be getting a $50 price drop, bringing the price to $299.99. This is in addition to the already announced Wind Waker HD bundle, which will also retail at $299.99 and include a 32GB hard drive, a Zelda-themed GamePad, and digital copies of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and the Zelda Hyrule Historia book.

According to Kotaku the basic model is being phased out:

Kotaku said:
Nintendo has all but phased out the white 8GB version of the Wii U, a system that retailers seemed to begin dumping this past spring. That "basic" version of Nintendo's console had originally sold for $299, sans pack-in game. "That has largely sold through in the marketplace," Fils-Aime said. "There is not much of that particular configuration out and we don't expect there to be much at all come September 20."

Super Mario 3D Land is being advertised as a November 22 game now. Basically, it and DKCR: Tropical Freeze switched launch months.

Wtf, so DK is December now?

I prefer that. I want Mario ASAP.

Aha, thanks.

I also prefer the new schedule. Makes way more sense to put the biggest of the big guns as soon as possible.

Oof. 3D World and LTTP2 on the same day? Those are my two most anticipated games. What are they doing to me! Better call off work that day.

Some places will refund you the difference if it's a price/sale within 30 days. Where did you buy it? It wouldn't hurt to ask them! You never know.

Best Buy. I specifically asked the manager who was helping me if he knew of any sales or price changes in the near future. I still have the receipt. Heck, I used my Best Buy card. So, they'll have a record of the purchase. I'll drop by and inquire. Like you said, never hurts to ask.

Maybe I can weasel a little store credit out of it and get another game.

It's still funny how much nintendo lies just before price drops. I'm surprised they only exploited Pikmin fans. Guess they were in a hurry to make new bundles.

This. I'm still bugged Mario Kart isn't this year.

Nintendo hates wallets.

To be fair though it's not like only Nintendo does it. Every company swears that it's not happening soon every time they're asked up until the minute they announce it. I'm just surprised they announced it so far out. I kinda feel sorry for the 10 people that don't hear about this and buy one between now and the 20th.

I'm a bit surprised that they didn't announce an ambassador program a la 3DS. But I guess the price cut isn't nearly as deep, and the 3DS drop was much closer to launch, too. Plus there was the whole Super Metroid for thirty cents thing they had going on for early adopters...

It's still funny! It was the most predictable price drop I've ever seen.

@Hinph

What are you going to play first?

EDIT- OH, and everyone is UNQUESTIONABLY going to buy one now, right? No "its too expensive" or "there aren't any games" BS anymore, right? I'm looking at D_H first, and then on down the line.

Not too surprising, I thought they had to make a move by September.

I still think they should be bundling third party games rather than first party, personally.

@Mr_Mustache It's not even technically a cheaper price tag though, considering there was already a $299.99 model. It's just that you get a whole lot more for $299.99 now.

On top of the 30 cent games, the Ambassador program was built in to the deluxe model at launch, in the form of the Deluxe Digital Promotion. I've already made 20-some dollars back and I plan to make a lot more.

@anon_mastermind

Most (read all) retail games released nowadays cost $60 US, regardless of whether or not they are worth it. Now that some games are releasing at 49.99 you guys are still complaining ;)

It's cool that Wind Waker isn't full price, but I would have liked to see a smaller price tag. Doesn't matter, I'm in no hurry to buy it. By the time I get to it it'll probably be cheaper... what am I saying, Nintendo games seldom go down in price. Maybe I could find a sale...

@Mr_Mustache

Hmmm. I think I should have to get a dungeon or two done in ALBW and then binge on Mario.
