Beginning on September 20th, the Wii U Deluxe model will be getting a $50 price drop, bringing the price to $299.99. This is in addition to the already announced Wind Waker HD bundle, which will also retail at $299.99 and include a 32GB hard drive, a Zelda-themed GamePad, and digital copies of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and the Zelda Hyrule Historia book.

According to Kotaku the basic model is being phased out:

Kotaku said:
Nintendo has all but phased out the white 8GB version of the Wii U, a system that retailers seemed to begin dumping this past spring. That "basic" version of Nintendo's console had originally sold for $299, sans pack-in game. "That has largely sold through in the marketplace," Fils-Aime said. "There is not much of that particular configuration out and we don't expect there to be much at all come September 20."

I agree that the time between is too long, but I also agree with Stephen that it's a great idea otherwise. Maybe if it was like 2 days early, instead of a week and a half. A week and a half is too long. 2 days makes it tempting to go digital, but if you don't want to it isn't that bad to wait 48 hours.

The MSRP for Wind Waker HD, Wii Party U, and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is $49.99. Interesting. I'm loving that DK price tag, but it does make it seem like a lesser product, I hope the game can stand up to DKCR.

I think they're trying to incentivize digital, but it comes across as simply punishing retail.

Just make it cheaper for digital, Nintendo! Sheesh.

@TriforceBun

Now THAT I could totally get behind. $10 less for digital would be awesome.

Oh, and Wii Party U is bundled with a Wii remote Plus. Great value.

@anon_mastermind

Interesting. Anything that gets more WM+ out there and helps justify games that use them is good to me.

@JargonYeah, it's just too bad I already have four. i'll wait for a stand alone version... or surely, the digital download will be cheaper.

I'm glad that it finally happened just so people can stop wondering about it. I'm surprised that they're releasing Mario 3D World and A Link Between Worlds on the same day too.

I'm a little worried Wii Fit U might not make it this season. But I'm wondering what the heck could be taking so long? The game was very playable at E3 2012, and I can't imagine there've been many new yoga breakthroughs since the last game!

This is good, but I think they need to be even more aggressive with the digital promotion. They have very large margins there, so they should really make the price points attractive.

Without the games being tied to an account, I'm still nervous about buying big games digitally. I bought a boxed copy of Pikmin 3 for this reason.

@achhibbar
Yeah, I'm not buying anything digitally that I can get a physical copy of unless I know that I can easily move them to another console without having to deal with sending anything to Nintendo or something like that. If they were to go to an account system, I'd buy everything digital since I'm going all digital for PS4/Xbone too.

One interesting thing to note is that, starting with Wind Waker, Nintendo's games are all releasing on a Friday instead of the usual Sunday release. Hopefully this means that the games I preordered online will arrive on the actual release date instead of the following Monday.

The more content the better. I hope there are a lot of ab exercises. But really, I just want it to release already so I can have that extra incentive to get back into shape. With the original Wii Fit I went on to lose around 40 pounds. Now I'm looking to lose 15 pounds and Wii Fit U can certainly help.

Hmm, do want the WW bundle but do not want the Zelda themed WUG, dilemmas!

Well, that's a bit of a kick in the nuts for me, since I just bought the dumb thing about 10 days ago.

But, what's $50 in the grand scheme of things, I suppose.

I'm the other way around. Maybe we could trade...

@chrisguy

Some places will refund you the difference if it's a price/sale within 30 days. Where did you buy it? It wouldn't hurt to ask them! You never know.

What's this about Mario being moved up?

There should really be a 3D World bundle too.

@TriforceBun

Hmm, I was fully ready to cough up $60 for Tropical Freeze... I guess it's nice that they still intend to release certain games at a slightly discounted price.
