Beginning on September 20th, the Wii U Deluxe model will be getting a $50 price drop, bringing the price to $299.99. This is in addition to the already announced Wind Waker HD bundle, which will also retail at $299.99 and include a 32GB hard drive, a Zelda-themed GamePad, and digital copies of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and the Zelda Hyrule Historia book.

According to Kotaku the basic model is being phased out:

Kotaku said:
Nintendo has all but phased out the white 8GB version of the Wii U, a system that retailers seemed to begin dumping this past spring. That "basic" version of Nintendo's console had originally sold for $299, sans pack-in game. "That has largely sold through in the marketplace," Fils-Aime said. "There is not much of that particular configuration out and we don't expect there to be much at all come September 20."

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

A little shocking Nintendo is doing this so early, but it does make sense.

Good, it needed to be done. This plus the upcoming software lineup should help move units.

What's the story with the Basic model? What's the price of the Wind Waker model? More details, OP!

@Jargon

Basic model is being phased out. Wind Waker model is the same price and is black (with Zelda etchings), plus comes with a voucher for a DD copy of Hyrule Historia.

@Jargon

WW model is $300 as well which looks like it swaps out Nintendoland for the WW remake. Nothing mentioned about the basic model from what I read.

$299 sounds pretty good this holiday. Now they just need to ADVERTISE the f*** out of everything.

Color me intrigued.

Yup, this will help sales. Why don't they have a Disney Infinity bundle with Wii U?

But Iwata said it's the games?!?!

Pretty easy to see coming. Still not low enough for me to dip in, though a Smash bundle might rope me in...

So stupid. Oh well, better for the consumer anyway!

If anyone jumps on board now, you should pick up Pikmin 3, it's great.

Wasn't so stupid with the 3DS. I'm glad to seeing Nintendo take more of an all-in approach. The system is doing bad enough that they can't be safe here.

@PogueSquadron

The 3DS wasn't about to get super, super heavy hitters one per month until Christmas, though.

@Jargon

At original price you get Nintendo Land only. WITH PRICE DROP you now get Nintendo Land AND Wind Waker. So, gameS!!!

@-JKR-

It also wasn't going to be facing two stiff competitors then either.

I agree. You have to think long term on it. Gotta spend money to make money. Even with these big games coming out, the Wii U is still a tough sell, especially with a $99 Wii sitting on store shelves. I've already bore witness to someone opting for a Wii over Wii U. If Nintendo is fine putting up sub GameCube numbers, then they could keep the price where it's at, but otherwise they need to be more aggressive.

Crazy news bomb! A couple things...

I gotta say, I think the price drop is smart. If they were releasing something like MK8 or SSB this holiday I could see why they might not want to drop it, but I don't think the hype is quite there for the games this season.

DK: Tropical Freeze is $50?? This is very peculiar to me. I mean, it's cool that I'm paying less, but I wonder why...

Zelda TWW HD is buyable via download on Sept 20, but retail copies won't be on sale until Oct 4. That...is annoying. I hope that doesn't keep up. Stop pushing digital so hard, Nintendo, you're starting to tick me off!

@missypissy

Is this true? I was under the impression that the normal (black) Wii U would be 300 with NL, while the Zelda version would be 300 with TWW HD but no NL.

@PogueSquadron

I guess!

And hey, at least it means more Wii U owners for us to hang out with on Miiverse and such. So no more complaining from me, I'm done. :)

@TriforceBun

I think it makes sense to push digital games earlier than retail release. Once a game goes gold there are not going to be any more changes made to the code so why not have the digital version available earlier?

This would especially be true in cases of online games where servers get hammered hard on release day. It lets you stretch out your launch a bit more.

Nintendo ain't messing around. They moved Super Mario 3D World up to November to battle the launches from Sony and Microsoft. I think Wii U is really attractive at 300 dollars including a game. Those who have families will want to pick up the Nintendo Land bundle, and Zelda fans or solo gamers will want to grab the Zelda model.

I wish we could get a date for Wii Fit U.
