Nintendo E3 2013: Ubisoft is confident that the Wii U is a good place to do business

It's not all doom and gloom. Rayman delay aside, Ubisoft has been one of the biggest supporters of the Wii U so far, and it looks like they plan to continue that support into the near future.

From Tony Key, senior VP of sales and marketing at Ubisoft:

“We did not take a big risk with all those launch titles on Wii U"

"[Wii U game] development isn’t expensive -- some Wii U games are versions of games for other platforms, like Assassin’s Creed. And we continue to invest in that system."

“We have just as many titles coming on Wii U this year as we did after launch, because the system isn’t as resource-intensive to make games for it. We continue to believe that the Wii U will find its audience. We saw some good games [during Nintendo Direct this week]. We’re confident that the Wii U is a good place for us to do business, and we can make money there.”

This comes after a recent announcement of a drop in some support for the Wii U, so it is difficult to get a sense of exactly where Ubisoft stands.

Ubisoft has several key games in the works for the Wii U, including the highly anticipated Watch Dogs, the infamous Rayman Legends, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, and Splinter Cell: Blacklist. Let's hope that both Ubisoft and other developers see the potential of the Wii U!

This came after they announced they were scaling back Wii U development. I think people thought they were abandoning the platform altogether, so this cleared the air.

If even Ubisoft is reducing support, that can't be a good sign...

@ludist210 Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Interesting. So it's probably just PR speak. But he does seem to think that bringing multiplatform titles to the Wii U isn't a huge risk, at least.

At least it's somewhat understandable PR speak. Here's EA's Frank Gibeau for comparison:

We're not announcing any new Wii U titles at E3, but that doesn't preclude us making games for it going forward. Do we have developers inside Electronic Arts that are watching the Wii U and understanding how it's developing? Yes, we're absolutely doing that. Do we have active development of Wii U titles that we're ready to publicly announce right now. No we do not.

See, that contradicts what Reggie said during the "Nintendo Power Hour" on GT yesterday. He said that despite what EA is saying, they're developing titles. It even says as much in your quote, just that they aren't announcing them yet.

What is odd to me is that EA is releasing FIFA 14 on Wii and not Wii U...huh?

@ludist210
That's probably because they can rehash earlier FIFA titles from the Wii that much more easily, and get away with it.

Maybe EA is keeping the door open now, after the XBone backlash.

I hope this is true and Ubisoft doesn't abandon Wii U. I do not want to get two consoles this gen and while Nintendo 1st party games are much more important to me it's nice to mix it up sometimes.

@r_hjort

I think the key words are "ready to announce right now." Really.

EA never says they AREN'T developing games, just that they aren't ready to ANNOUNCE them.

EDIT- Oh, Ludist already said that. I read his post twice and missed it both times, what the heck.

@r_hjort

I'd hope a ton of devs kept their doors open after that.

As always though, it's nice to hear the sentiment, but show me the games, Ubi. Show me all the games.

That sounds about right too. It's EA speak for 'we're not ready to completely torch the Nintendo bridge- Yet.'
